Recap: Miami-Florida vs. Virginia Tech

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Stephen Morris threw for two first-quarter touchdowns as Miami-Florida rolled to a 30-12 win over Virginia Tech in a key Atlantic Coast Conference showdown from Sun Life Stadium.

Duke Johnson rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries to help Miami (5-4, 4-2 ACC) halt a three-game losing streak and take over sole possession of the ACC's Coastal Division. Jake Wieclaw contributed three field goals to the victory, while Morris finished with 170 yards on 13-of-28 passing and did not commit a turnover.

Logan Thomas racked up a career-high 124 yards on the ground with a touchdown and added 199 passing yards on 19-of-37 efficiency for Virginia Tech (4-5, 2-3), but was responsible for two red-zone giveaways that played a part in the Hokies' second straight loss and fourth defeat in five outings. The junior quarterback was intercepted on the game's first drive and later lost a fumble on the Miami 1-yard line during the third quarter.

Virginia Tech also had a punt blocked that led to a Miami touchdown, while kicker Jimmy Journell missed an extra point as well as a 47-yard field goal attempt and Thomas threw another interception in the game's final stages.

The Hokies outgained Miami by a 130-36 margin in total yards during the first quarter, but found themselves down 14-3 mainly because of two blunders from their usually strong special teams units.

Gabriel Terry blocked a punt by A.J. Hughes to give the Hurricanes possession at the Virginia Tech 16-yard line just over six minutes in, and Morris hit Allen Hurns inside the right pylon two plays later for a 7-0 Miami lead with 8:33 left in the opening period.

The Hokies answered with a 12-play, 45-yard drive that ended in Journell's 22- yard field goal on the ensuing drive, but Johnson took the subsequent kickoff 81 yards before being brought down at the VT 19-yard line to put the Hurricanes back in scoring position.

It took Miami just two plays to again find the end zone, with Morris connecting with Mike James out of the backfield on a crossing route for a 16- yard score that extended the Canes' advantage to 14-3.

Virginia Tech trimmed the deficit to five with 10:39 remaining in the first half, as Thomas raced 73 yards untouched on a quarterback draw with the Hurricanes blowing an assignment. However, Journell's point-after try would sail wide to the left.

Miami countered with Wieclaw field goals on its next two series to restablish an 11-point cushion. The first, a 22-yard boot, was set up by a 65-yard Johnson run, while back-to-back strikes from Morris to Clive Walford that totaled 56 yards led to a 31-yarder that put the Hurricanes up 20-9 with 4:12 to go before intermission.

Thomas marched Virginia Tech inside the Miami 5-yard line heading into the final minute of the half, but the Hurricanes would hold and the Hokies settled for Journell's 20-yard field goal as time expired to trim the lead to eight.

Despite the Hokies' defense limiting Miami to no first downs and three total yards in the third quarter, more mistakes on the other end prevented Virginia Tech from closing the gap.

Thomas mishandled the exchange from center in a goal-to-goal situation from the Hurricane 1-yard line, and Journell couldn't make good on a 47-yard three- point try on the Hokies' next series.

Miami put the game out of reach with an 8-play, 54-yard sequence capped by Johnson's 7-yard burst midway through the fourth quarter, and Johnson's 21- yard run paved the way for a Wieclaw 37-yard field goal with 2:54 left that lengthened the margin to 30-12.
