Recap: Virginia vs. Miami-Florida

Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Michael Rocco's 10-yard touchdown pass to Jake McGee with six seconds remaining lifted the Virginia Cavaliers to a 41-40 win over the Miami Hurricanes in an ACC thriller at Scott Stadium.

Rocco finished with 300 passing yards and four touchdowns on 29-of-37 accuracy. Dominique Terrell hauled in nine passes for 127 yards, while Darius Jennings caught a pair of touchdown passes for the Cavaliers (4-6, 2-4 ACC).

The Hurricanes (5-5, 4-3), who entered the weekend atop the Coastal Division standings, find themselves needing to win one of their final two games to become bowl eligible. Duke Johnson had 150 rushing yards on 16 carries in the loss, and he also threw for a touchdown and returned a kick for a score.

The teams combined to put 35 points on the board in a blistering first quarter. Rocco opened the scoring four minutes into the game with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Miles Gooch.

Miami marched 75 yards in seven plays during its opening possession, scoring on a halfback pass as Johnson found Allen Hurns for an eight-yard touchdown.

UVA answered right back. Rocco capped a 78-yard drive with a six-yard TD pass to Jennings, putting the Cavaliers on top, 14-7.

After throwing his first career touchdown pass on Miami's previous drive, Johnson quieted the home crowd by returning the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to the end zone to knot the score at 14 apiece.

However, the Cavs would once again respond, as Phillip Sims found the end zone on a six-yard run with 1:40 to play in the opening frame.

Miami made it a 21-21 game on Hurns' 12-yard TD reception from Stephen Morris on the first play of the second quarter.

The 'Canes took the lead on Jake Wieclaw's 30-yard field goal midway through the second stanza.

UVA regained the lead following its next possession, as Kevin Parks finished off a nine-play, 76-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown scamper.

Both defenses settled down a bit in the second half. The only points of the third quarter belonged to Miami, as Morris found Clive Walford for a nine-yard TD pass midway through the frame.

The Hurricanes stretched their advantage to 38-28 on Morris' 35-yard scoring strike to Phillip Dorsett at the 11:38 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Cavaliers cut the deficit to 38-35 with 5:33 to play, as Rocco connected with Jennings for another touchdown, this time from five yards to cap a 12- play, 71-yard drive that lasted more than six minutes.

UVA's defense forced a three-and-out and regained possession at its own 12- yard line with 4:27 remaining. But on the second play of that possession, Rocco was sacked in the end zone for a safety, making it a 40-35 game.

However, the Cavaliers would have the last laugh. UVA's final drive covered 87 yards in 16 plays and lasted only 2:32, with Rocco finding McGee for the game- winner in the final seconds.

The Cavaliers offense converted 9-of-14 third downs for the game and came away with touchdowns on all six of their trips inside the red zone. Prior to the game, Miami announced the suspensions of starting wide receiver Rashawn Scott and starting linebacker Eddie Johnson, while starting outside linebacker Denzel Perryman did not travel with the team because of an ankle injury.
