Recap: Idaho vs. San Jose St

Moscow, ID (Sports Network) - David Fales threw for 328 yards and four touchdowns as he led the San Jose State Spartans to a 42-13 win over the Idaho Vandals in Western Athletic Conference action at the Kibbie Dome.

Fales completed 27-of-39 passes and was sacked one time as the Spartans (7-2, 3-1 WAC) posted their third straight win and the seventh in the last eight outings. Noel Grigsby caught six passes for 88 yards and a couple of scores while De'Leon Eskridge chipped in with 47 yards and a TD on 16 rushing attempts.

The Vandals (1-8, 1-3) were paced by Logan Bushnell who connected on 14-of-29 passes for 196 yards and a score, but he was picked off once and sacked five times as Idaho suffered a third-straight defeat. Taylor Davis converted 3-of-8 passes for a mere 11 yards and was sacked once as well.

Idaho actually scored the only points of the first quarter as Bushnell hooked up with Najee Lovett for a 12-yard TD pass at the 14:06 mark of the period after the team gained control of a fumble.

The Spartans assumed the lead in the second quarter as Eskridge hit the end zone from one yard out and Fales combined with Jabari Carr on a 15-yard TD pass play to give the visitors a 14-7 advantage at the break.

In the third quarter the Vandals again scored early thanks to a 41-yard field goal at the 13:09 mark of the period. The kicker returned midway through the frame to convert a 33-yard field goal to cut the deficit to just a single point, 14-13, but from there SJSU ran off 28 unanswered points to secure the easy victory.

The scoring burst for the Spartans began with a 15-yard TD catch by Grigsby, continued with a 35-yard touchdown reception by Chandler Jones and was followed by a six-yard TD grab by Grigsby again in the fourth quarter.

The San Jose State defense put the game on ice as Bene Benwikere intercepted a pass and returned it 47 yards to the end zone less than a minute later in order to leave no doubt.

This was the first game for the Vandals without Robb Akey as head coach. Under contract through the 2014 campaign Akey, who was 20-50 since assuming the position, was fired following the team's loss to Louisiana Tech late last month. Serving as interim head coach for the time being is offensive coordinator Jason Gesser.

Also out of the picture now in Moscow is former starting quarterback Dominique Blackman who was dismissed from the team due to disciplinary issues.
