Recap: San Jose St vs. Colorado State

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - David Fales threw for 370 yards and three touchdowns as he guided the San Jose State Spartans to a 40-20 victory over the Colorado State Rams in non-conference play at Spartan Stadium.

Fales, in just his third game with the program, completed 27-of-34 passing for the Spartans (2-1) as they won their second straight after opening the season with a 20-17 setback versus Stanford. Jabari Carr reeled in eight passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns, one of three players to have at least 100 receiving yards for SJSU on the night.

The Rams (1-2), losers of two straight, were paced by quarterback Garrett Grayson who hit on 24-of-42 for 297 yards and two scores, but he was picked off once and sacked five times. Grayson also paced the team in rushing with 40 net yards on 11 attempts.

San Jose State scored consecutive touchdowns to begin the night as Carr reeled in a 25-yard TD pass from Fales, followed by a 10-yard TD run by Tyler Ervin to make the score 14-0 heading into the second period.

Grayson had a hand in both of the touchdowns CSU scored in the second quarter, the first coming on a 15-yard run at the 13:50 mark, while his 28-yard toss to Kivon Cartwright also ended up in the end zone. However, M.J. McPeek's attempt at a two-point conversion failed, leaving the visitors with a one-point deficit.

The next drive by the Spartans ate up nearly six minutes, covered 65 yards on 15 plays and ended with a 26-yard field goal by Austin Lopez to give the hosts a 17-13 advantage at the break.

Fales and Carr combined on a 19-yard TD pass play for the only points of the third quarter, while a 30-yard Lopez conversion early in the fourth made the score 27-13.

The Rams managed to score once more on the night as Grayson hit Charles Lovett with a 38-yard TD strike, but that still left plenty of time for the Spartans to add two more TDs.

Chandler Jones, who caught six balls for 133 yards, caught a 43-yard TD pass from Kyle Nunn at the 9:39 mark of the fourth period and then struck again less than two minutes later with a 51-yard TD reception from Fales to double- up on CSU.

The Spartans finished the meeting with 568 yards of total offense, controlling the ball for almost 38 minutes as a result.
