Recap: UNLV vs. Wyoming

Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Brett Smith threw for 412 yards and three touchdowns as he led the Wyoming Cowboys to a 28-23 win over the UNLV Rebels in Mountain West Conference action at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Smith converted 25-of-33 passes and was sacked three times, which is why he was left with minus-14 yards rushing for the Cowboys (4-7, 3-4 MWC) as the team posted a third straight victory. Chris McNeill caught seven passes for 93 yards and two TDs for the visitors.

The Rebels (2-10, 2-5) were paced by Caleb Herring who completed 22-of-36 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns as the team bowed for the second straight week.

The teams traded scores throughout the meeting, beginning with a one-yard TD run by Wyoming's Brandon Miller at the 11:31 mark of the first quarter.

Later in the frame the special teams for the Rebels responded as Sidney Hodge returned a blocked field goal attempt 53 yards to knot the score at 7-7.

At the 2:10 mark of the first, Smith combined with J.J. Quinlan on a five-yard TD pass play.

Unfortunately for the Rebels, while they did produce the next scoring play in the contest, it did not match Wyoming as Nolan Kohorst knocked through a 35- yard field goal to make the score 14-10 with 6:28 remaining in the first half.

Smith tossed TD passes of 33 and four yards to McNeill over the final five minutes of the second quarter, but in between Herring hooked up with Taylor Barnhill on a three-yard scoring toss, leaving the visitors with a 28-17 advantage at the break.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Herring's five-yard TD pass to Trey Mays with just over five minutes remaining in regulation cut the difference to 28-23, but that's how the game ended after the hosts failed on a two-point conversion attempt.
