Recap: New Mexico vs. Nevada

Albuquerque, NM (Sports Network) - Cody Fajardo threw for three touchdowns as he guided the Nevada Wolf Pack to a 31-24 win over the New Mexico Lobos in Mountain West Conference play at University Stadium.

Fajardo completed 18-of-27 passes for just 133 yards, but he also used his feet to move the ball as he ran for a game-high 186 yards on 20 carries for Nevada (7-4, 4-3 MWC) as it snapped a three-game slide. Stefphon Jefferson, who entered the week as the nation's leading rusher with 143.6 ypg, accounted for 128 yards and a TD. Brandon Wimberly contributed with six catches for 34 yards and two scores.

The Lobos (4-8, 1-6) were paced by Kasey Carrier who ran for 145 yards on 18 carries, but it was quarterback Cole Gautsche who made it into the end zone twice on 16 attempts. The signal-caller attempted just two passes and missed on both.

The home team took a quick lead just three plays into the game. After a 53- yard run by Lamaar Thomas, Cole Gautsche scored from 20 yards out and the Lobos had a 7-0 advantage.

Nevada responded shortly thereafter as Jefferson made his way into the end zone on a one-yard run to tie the game at 7-7.

Using up more than five minutes on their next drive, the Lobos moved the ball 69 yards on nine plays, capped by a two-yard TD run by Gautsche to regain the seven-point advantage.

In was then Fajardo's turn to go to work and he responded by tossing a one- yard TD to Jefferson at the 12:34 mark of the second quarter to again knot the score.

In the remaining minutes of the first half, the teams again traded scores, but while UNM's Justus Adams was knocking through a 42-yard field goal, Fajardo was hitting Wimberly with a three-yard TD strike to give the visitors a 21-17 edge at the break.

In the third, Colin Ditsworth booted a 23-yard field goal for the Pack and later in the period Fajardo and Wimberly combined on a two-yard TD pass play. In between the rushing attack of the Lobos led Jhurell Pressley over the goal line from two yards out to make the score 31-24 at the end of three and headed towards a scoreless fourth quarter.

New Mexico, which entered the week ranked fifth in the nation in rushing with 311.6 ypg, gained 352 yards on 50 attempts versus the Wolf Pack. The Lobos failed to complete a single pass for the first time since 1964 when the team also missed on two attempts versus Montana.
