Recap: Ball State vs. Western Mich

Muncie, IN (Sports Network) - Jahwan Edwards rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime, as the Ball State Cardinals prevailed over the Western Michigan Broncos, 30-24, in Mid-American Conference play at Scheumann Stadium.

Keith Wenning completed 27-of-43 passes for 265 yards with a touchdown and an interception for Ball State (4-3, 2-2 MAC), which snapped a two-game losing streak. Willie Snead hauled in nine catches for 147 yards, both game-highs.

For WMU (3-4, 1-2), Dareyon Chance carried the ball 11 times for 116 yards and Brian Fields finished with 96 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Tyler Van Tubbergen threw for 202 yards and a touchdown to Josh Schaffer (six catches, 90 yards), but he completed just 16-of-31 passes and threw two interceptions.

Ball State got on the scoreboard first early in the opening quarter with an 11- yard touchdown run from Edwards, but WMU responded less than three minutes later with a one-yard scoring rush from Antoin Scriven to tie the game at 7-7.

The Broncos took their first lead of the game early in the second quarter after Van Tubbergen connected with Schaffer for a 45-yard scoring strike. A 23-yard touchdown run from Fields later in the quarter gave WMU a 21-7 advantage.

The Cardinals managed to cut into the lead with less than a minute left in the first half on a 34-yard field goal from Steven Schott.

Ball State continued to chip away at its deficit at the 4:29 mark of the third quarter following a 23-yard touchdown run from Edwards.

The score would remain 21-17 until late in the fourth quarter. Down four, the Cardinals drove 57 yards in nine plays, which resulted in an 11-yard scoring pass from Wenning to Jamil Smith to give them their first lead since the first quarter.

WMU had the ball with a chance to tie when Van Tubbergen threw an interception to Tony Martin that would have ended the game, but Martin fumbled the ball back to the Broncos. They made the Cardinals pay as Andrew Haldeman nailed a 52-yard field goal in the waning seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime.

The Broncos got the ball first in the overtime period, but Haldeman missed a 36-yard field goal attempt. The Cardinals answered on their possession with a 15-yard touchdown from Edwards to win.

Ball State converted 7-of-17 third downs, while WMU was successful on just 1- of-9 third down attempts.
