Recap: Akron vs. Miami-Ohio

Akron, OH (Sports Network) - Zac Dysert completed 34-of-49 passes for 519 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Miami-Ohio RedHawks to a thrilling, 56-49, victory over the Akron Zips in a Mid-American Conference shootout at InfoCision Stadium.

Dysert also ran for 108 yards, which helped him set a new MAC record with 624 yards of total offense. Dysert also set a new Miami (3-2, 2-0 MAC) record with six touchdown passes. Dawan Scott was Dysert's favorite target on his record setting day. Scott reeled in 11 receptions for 208 yards and two scores. Andy Cruse also had a very productive game with nine catches for 111 yards and a touchdown.

Akron (1-4, 0-1) put up a fight behind the leadership of its signal caller, Dalton Williams, who threw for 446 yards and four touchdowns on 32-of-42 passing. Marquelo Suel recorded a team-best eight catches for 105 yards and a score while Dee Frieson grabbed seven balls for 98 yards and two touchdowns. Jawon Chisholm gained 156 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

The RedHawks jumped in front early as Dysert completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Luke Swift only 39 seconds after kickoff. Dysert then completed a 5-yard pass to Cruse for a score with just under five minutes left in the first frame. Kaleb Patterson failed to make the extra point attempt, which left Miami ahead, 13-0.

Akron's hurry up offense answered with a pair of scores before the first quarter ended. Williams found Jerrod Dillard for a 56-yard touchdown pass to finish off a four-play, 92-yard drive for the Zips' first point. Then with 1:21 left in the opening quarter, Williams completed a 10-yard pass to Suel to give Akron a 14-13 lead.

Miami came right back in the second period. Dysert completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Scott to finish off a drive that lasted less than two minutes. The RedHawks struck again as Dysert and Scott connected for a 33-yard pass play for a score. The Dysert-Scott added two more points with a successful two-conversion after the touchdown to make it 28-14 with just under 11 minutes left in the half.

The Zips battled back once again. Conor Hundley rushed four yards for a touchdown. Seven minutes later, Chisholm dashed three yards into the end zone to tie it up, 28-28.

Akron's defense then got to Dysert in the end zone to force a safety and give the Zips a 30-28 advantage with 1:15 left in the second quarter.

Dysert bounced back and led the RedHawks' offense down the field before completing a 12-yard touchdown pass to David Frazier, which gave Miami a 35-28 lead heading into halftime.

Akron wasted no time evening the score as Williams completed a 27-yard touchdown pass to Dee Frieson just over two minutes into the second half.

Miami built a 10-point lead with a 26-yard field goal by Patterson and a 19- yard touchdown pass from Dysert to Westbrook.

The scoring continued in the final quarter as Chisholm brought Akron within three points with a one-yard plunge into the end zone.

Patterson extended the lead to 48-42 with just over 10 minutes left with a 43- yard field goal.

Akron answered with a nine-play, 75-yard drive which was punctuated by a 18- yard touchdown pass from Williams to Frieson.

Dysert displayed some late game heroics as he engineered a 13-play, 89-yard drive with Miami trailing. Justin Semmes rushed three yards for a touchdown with just over a minute left to put the RedHawks ahead. Dysert completed a pass to Frazier for the two-point conversion to give Miami a 56-49 edge.

The Zips took the field with one last shot. Williams completed four passes to Frieson to drive into Miami's territory, but he was then intercepted by Brison Burris which clinched the win for the RedHawks.

Akron and Miami combined for 1,334 yards of total offense in the high scoring affair.
