Recap: Ohio U vs. Akron

Athens, OH (Sports Network) - With a pair of touchdown passes, Tyler Tettleton became Ohio University's all-time leader in scoring strikes as the Bobcats prevailed, 34-28, in a Mid-American Conference showdown over the Akron Zips.

It was Ohio's (7-0, 3-0 Mid-American Conference) homecoming game and Tettleton finished 13-of-27 for 150 yards and two touchdown passes, giving him 40 for his career. Tettleton also got involved in the receiving game, hauling in a 39-yard touchdown pass from Landon Smith on a trick play. Troy Hill had 52 yards receiving on five catches. Hill and Donte Foster each caught a touchdown pass.

The Bobcats displayed a strong run game as Beau Blankenship rushed for 108 yards on 17 carries, Tettleton rushed for 65 yards on 12 carries, and Ryan Boykin rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

For the Zips (1-6, 0-3 MAC), Dalton Williams was 32-of-53 passing for 298 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Jerrod Dillard had two touchdown catches, while Dee Frieson had 57 yards receiving on five catches. Jawon Chisholm ran for 177 yards on 28 attempts and caught five passes for 55 yards.

The Bobcats got their offense going early with a reverse flea flicker that led to a 39-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Tettleton at the 11:57 mark of the first quarter.

Ohio's lead increased when Tettleton threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Foster later in the first quarter.

Matt Weller then hit a pair of field goals, one from 44 yards out and a the other 29-yarder, to put Ohio up, 20-0.

Near the end of the first half, Akron put together a four-play, 75-yard drive that took only 28 seconds and ended with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Williams to L.T. Smith.

The Zips came out firing in the second half and managed a 75-yard, nine-play drive that was capped off by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Williams to Tyler Williams. The Akron deficit was cut to six.

Ohio answered later in the third quarter with a two-yard touchdown pass from Tettleton to Hill.

Following an interception, Boykin ran in a five-yard touchdown to give Ohio a 34-14 lead late in the third quarter.

Akron continued to fight back and Williams found Dillard for a six-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter that brought the Zips' deficit to 13.

Late in the fourth, Williams connected with Dillard again, this times on a five-yard touchdown pass, but it was too little, too late as Ohio ran out the clock and held on for the win.

Ohio has been fantastic all year protecting the ball. It possessed a plus-2.17 turnover margin coming into the game, ranking fourth in the nation. It forced two more turnovers against Akron and did not commit any themselves, continuing its great success.
