Recap: Bowling Green vs. Buffalo

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Matt Schilz threw for one touchdown and ran for another as he helped lead the Bowling Green Falcons to a 21-7 win over the Buffalo Bulls in Mid-American Conference action at Columbus Crew Stadium.

Schilz converted 18-of-30 passes for 228 yards for the Falcons (8-4, 6-2 MAC), but he was also picked off three times on the day. John Pettigrew gained a game-high 93 yards and scored once on 29 rushing attempts as the team won for the seventh time in the last eight outings.

The Bulls (4-8, 3-5) were guided by Joe Licata who hit on 13-of-30 passes for 168 yards, but he was sacked seven times which resulted in Buffalo coming away with just 29 net rushing yards as it had a three-game win streak snapped.

Following a scoreless first quarter, the Falcons posted the first points of the game on a one-yard TD run by Pettigrew at the 5:26 mark of the second frame. Later in the period, Schilz hooked up with Shaun Joplin on a 48-yard TD pass play to make the score 14-0 at the break.

In the third quarter BGSU pushed the lead to 21 points, thanks to a seven-yard scoring run by Schilz with just over two minutes to play in the period.

After nine punts and a fumble on their first 10 possessions, the Bulls finally broke through with just under 10 minutes left in regulation as Alex Dennison crossed the goal line on a four-yard run. Unfortunately, Buffalo could not cut into the lead any more, turning the ball over on downs on its final three possessions of the outing.

Bowling Green, which ranked first in the conference and seventh in the nation in passing yards allowed (173.5 ypg) coming into the week, gave up 168 yards through the air and just 197 yards of total offense to the Bulls.

In news off the field for Buffalo this week, the school and head coach Jeff Quinn agreed to a five-year contract extension to keep Quinn with the Bulls through the 2017 season.
