Recap: Western Mich vs. Toledo

Kalamazoo, MI (Sports Network) - David Fluellen ran for a career-high 213 yards and three touchdowns as he guided the Toledo Rockets to a convincing 37-17 win over the Western Michigan Broncos in Mid-American Conference play at Waldo Stadium.

Fluellen carried the ball 21 times for the Rockets (4-1, 2-0 MAC) as they posted their fourth straight win after opening the campaign with a 24-17 overtime loss against Arizona on the road. Quarterback Terrance Owens converted 22-of-33 passes for 243 yards and survived a pair of sacks.

The Broncos (2-3, 0-1), losers of two of their last three outings, were led by Tyler VanTubbergen who hit on 26-of-46 passes for 232 yards and a score, but he was sacked twice and picked off three times, one of those INTs being returned for a touchdown.

Toledo ran out to a 20-0 advantage in the first half as Fluellen scored on runs of six and 53 yards in the first frame, while kicker Jeremiah Detmer converted field goal attempts of 20 and 28 yards in the first and second quarters, respectively.

WMU finally landed on the scoreboard with three minutes remaining in the first half as VanTubbergen hit Jaime Wilson with a 22-yard TD strike to make the score 20-7 at the break.

A safety for the Broncos at the 13:36 mark of the third quarter again cut into the deficit for the hosts, but Toledo still maintained a double-digit advantage and was preparing to build upon it once more.

Barely three minutes later, Jordan Haden stepped up and picked off a pass for the Rockets and raced 63 yards the other way for a touchdown. Shortly thereafter, a 22-yard TD run by Fluellen made the score 34-9.

With under a minute remaining in the third period, Western Michigan responded with a 48-yard TD pass from VanTubbergen to Brian Fields, but that would be the last time the WMU offense was heard from.

The only scoring in the fourth came courtesy of Detmer who knocked through a 23-yard field goal to give the Rockets a comfortable 20-point victory.

The Rockets finished with 521 yards of total offense, averaging 7.4 yards per snap.
