Recap: Shrine-West vs. Shrine-East

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Arizona's Matt Scott threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Mississippi State's Chad Bumphis in the second quarter to help lead the West team to a 28-13 win over the East in the 88th annual East- West Shrine Game at Tropicana Field.

Bumphis led all players with 91 receiving yards on four catches and was named the game's Offensive MVP. Texas A&M's Christine Michael added a rushing touchdown while gaining 43 yards on 13 carries to help the West earn its second straight victory in the event.

Scott completed 3-of-4 passes for 80 yards, with Western Michigan's Alex Carder going 9-of-11 for 95 yards and an interception in the West's quarterback rotation.

Heisman Trophy finalist Collin Klein paced the East squad with 35 rushing yards, but the Kansas State quarterback hit on just 5-of-13 pass attempts for 43 yards with an interception.

After recovering a fumble by Pittsburgh's Ray Graham on the opening play from scrimmage, the West quickly grabbed a 7-0 lead on a 3-yard run by Middle Tennessee State's Anthony Amos less than four minutes into the contest.

The East team got on the board on a 48-yard field goal by Florida's Caleb Sturgis late in the first half, but the West put up two touchdowns within a span of 15 seconds to break the game open.

Scott and Bumphis capped a two-play drive with their 57-yard connection with one minute to go in the second quarter, and Kansas State cornerback Nigel Malone intercepted Louisiana Tech's Colby Cameron on the ensuing play from scrimmage and returned the pick 30 yards to extend the West's advantage to 21-3 by the half.

Malone was named the Defensive MVP for his efforts.

After recovering a fumbled punt by Mt. Union's Jasper Collins deep in West territory, the East cut into the deficit with 1:05 left in the third quarter on a 7-yard run by Army's Trent Steelman. However, the West regained an 18- point margin when Carder directed a 14-play, 80-yard drive culminating in Michael's 6-yard scoring run with 8:07 left to play.

Sturgis booted a 38-yard field goal with 1:24 left to conclude the scoring.

The West posted a 24-17 win in last year's edition, when the game was moved from Orlando to St. Petersburg.
