Recap: LSU vs. Auburn

Baton Rouge, LA (Sports Network) - Jeremy Hill rushed for a career-high 184 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries, as No. 6 LSU surged past Auburn, 35-21, on Saturday at Tiger Stadium.

Zach Mettenberger completed 14-of-22 passes for 229 yards, one touchdown and one interception, with Jarvis Landry hauling in seven passes for 118 yards and a score for LSU (4-0, 1-0 SEC), which has won 29 consecutive games in Death Valley in the month of September.

"We're pleased to a point, but we're not satisfied," LSU head coach Les Miles said. "We can play better, and we need to control these games."

Nick Marshall struggled under center for Auburn (3-1, 1-1), connecting on just 17-of-33 passes for 224 yards and a pair of interceptions.

Sammie Coates caught four passes for 139 yards in the setback, Auburn's seventh straight in Baton Rouge and eighth straight on the road overall.

"I think it was obvious in the beginning of the game we did not respond very well to the elements and to the crowd," Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn said. "We kind of found ourselves in a hole."

Auburn moved the ball across midfield on its opening touch, but on 4th-and-1 from the LSU 41, Marshall and Tre Mason got crossed up on a handoff exchange and Lamin Barrow jumped on the fumble to give LSU possession.

Three plays later, Hill knifed through the middle of the Auburn defense and scampered 49 yards for a score to make it 7-0 less than four minutes in.

LSU forced a quick three-and-out from Auburn and on the ensuing punt, Steven Clark fumbled the snap, giving LSU possession at the Auburn 10.

Hill turned the fumble into points on LSU's next play, surging 10 yards up the middle to double LSU's lead just over five minutes into the game.

Hill set up LSU's next score early in the second, breaking free for 54 yards down to the Auburn 1 before J.C. Copeland punched it in to make it 21-0 less than 2 1/2 minutes into the second quarter.

LSU carried its 21-point cushion into the break, but Mettenberger was picked off by Jermaine Whitehead on LSU's first play from scrimmage in the second half.

The turnover led to Auburn's first touchdown of the game, as Mason rushed five times on a 7-play scoring drive that the running back capped with a 2-yard TD surge to bring Auburn within 21-7 early in the third.

Mettenberger completed four straight passes on LSU's ensuing drive to move his squad inside the Auburn 10 before Hill surged ahead for a 6-yard score to make it 28-7 less than three minutes later.

Mason made it a two-score game late in the third with his second 2-yard TD run of the game, but Mettenberger hooked up with Landry for a 32-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter to give LSU a 35-14 lead.

Following an exchange of punts, Mason moved the sticks twice on a 10-play, 88- yard trek that Cameron Artis-Payne capped with a 12-yard TD run to make it 35-21 with 6:33 remaining.

Auburn appeared to recover an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, but the team was whistled for illegal touching to negate the recovery.

Auburn forced a quick three-and-out to regain possession, but Marshall was picked off by Jalen Mills to all but end Auburn's comeback bid.
