Recap: Arkansas vs. Miss State

Little Rock, AR (SportsNetwork.com) - Damian Williams scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime as the Mississippi State Bulldogs pulled off a 24-17 victory against the Arkansas Razorbacks in SEC action at War Memorial Stadium.

Williams, who converted 3-of-4 passes on the day for 34 yards, also carried the ball seven times for 40 yards for the Bulldogs (5-6, 2-5 SEC) as they snapped a three-game slide. Tyler Russell converted 18-of-28 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns, one each to Jameon Lewis and LaDarius Perkins, but the quarterback was shaken up late in the contest, pressing Williams into action.

The Razorbacks (3-8, 0-7), losers of eight straight after opening the campaign with three consecutive victories against non-conference foes, were paced by Brandon Allen who completed 10-of-17 passes for 114 yards, while Julian Horton and Javontee Herndon both scored on the ground.

The only points of the first quarter came courtesy of Herndon who capped an eight-play, 56-yard drive with an eight-yard TD to give the hosts a 7-0 advantage. Kicker Zach Hocker contributed a 54-yard field goal with just under seven minutes remaining in the half.

MSU managed to knot the game at 10-10, thanks to a Devon Bell 24-yard field goal and a 30-yard TD pass from Russell to Perkins.

Arkansas moved out to a 17-10 advantage in the third when Horton raced 22 yards into the end zone, but less than five minutes later Russell and Lewis combined on a five-yard TD pass play for MSU to again tie the score.

The Bulldogs appeared to score the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter, but an offensive pass interference penalty not only waved off the TD, it also pushed the visitors into a 2nd-and-32.

On the next play from scrimmage Russell was taken down hard and was forced to the sidelines with an apparent shoulder injury.

With 18 seconds remaining in regulation, Bell attempted a 42-yard field goal and, while it had the distance, it missed wide to the right, leaving the teams knotted at 17-17 and headed to overtime. Bell also had a 28-yard effort blocked early in the third.

Mississippi State scored a touchdown on the first play of overtime as Williams picked his way through the defense and into the end zone from 25 yards out.

Arkansas faced a 4th-and nine in the extra session and turned the ball over on an interception.

The Bulldogs finished the day with 488 yards of total offense, compared to just 339 for Arkansas.
