On the opening drive of the game, Mississippi State strung together a nine- play, 75-yard drive which lasted just over five minutes and was capped off by a one-yard touchdown run from Perkins. Bowling Green managed a 35-yard field goal from Tyler Tate midway through the first quarter but on the first play of the following drive for the Bulldogs, Prescott ran for a 75-yard touchdown to give Mississippi State a 14-3 lead.

With 4:15 left in the second quarter, Andre Givens took in a seven-yard score on the ground for Bowling Green's first touchdown of the game. The Bulldogs responded with a 10-play, 75-yard drive which resulted in a 10-yard touchdown run from Prescott with 1:04 left in the half. The only scoring in the second half came on a two-yard touchdown run from Johnson for the Falcons. Down by just two, Bowling Green decided to kick the extra point which made the score 21-20 in favor of the Bulldogs.
