Recap: Massachusetts vs. Vanderbilt

Foxborough, MA (Sports Network) - Austyn Carta-Samuels threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns as the Vanderbilt Commodores defeated the Minutemen of Massachusetts, 24-7, in a non-conference clash at Gillette Stadium.

Carta-Samuels converted 18-of-27 passes and was intercepted once as the Commodores (2-2) won for the second time in the last three outings. The signal-caller also caught a pass for 21 yards from Wesley Tate. Jonathan Krause finished with six receptions for a game-high 105 yards and a score.

The Minutemen (0-4), losers of six in a row dating back to last season, were paced by A.J. Doyle who converted 20-of-28 passes for 133 yards and a score. UMass managed just 99 rushing yards on 31 attempts on the day.

The only points of the first quarter came from the Commodores as Carta-Samuels hooked up with Krause on a 42-yard touchdown pass play to finish off a six- play, 81-yard drive.

Just two minutes into the second frame the Minutemen knotted the score thanks to a four-yard TD reception by Tajae Sharpe. That drive ate up more than six minutes on the clock and covered 75 yards on 14 plays.

Vandy kicker Carey Spear came on late in the first half after another stalled drive by the Commodores, this time knocking through a 32-yard field goal to give the visitors a 10-7 lead at the break.

Following a scoreless third quarter, the Commodores added to their advantage when Carta-Samuels combined with Jordan Matthews for an 11-yard TD less than two minutes into the fourth. Later in the period Jerron Seymour's one-yard touchdown run pushed the lead to 24-7.

The Minutemen, who entered the weekend ranked 118th in the country in total offense with just 262.0 ypg, compiled only 248 yards in the meeting.

UMass has won just once since the end of October, 2011, a stretch of 19 games. The lone victory was a 22-14 triumph over Akron on Nov. 10, 2012.
