Recap: Vanderbilt vs. UAB

Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Austyn Carta-Samuels completed 23-of-29 passes for a career-high 334 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score to lead the Vanderbilt Commodores over the UAB Blazers, 52-24, in non- conference action at Vanderbilt Stadium.

For the Commodores (3-2), Jordan Matthews had eight catches for 115 yards and a touchdown and Jonathan Krause had four receptions for 108 yards. On the ground, Jerron Seymour carried the ball 12 times for 107 yards and two scores, while Wesley Tate added 53 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.

Jonathan Perry threw for 155 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 9-of-16 passing for the Blazers (1-3). Austin Brown threw for just 51 yards and an interception on 10-of-20 passing. Jordan Howard carried the ball nine times for 92 yards to lead UAB on the ground. Jamarcus Nelson caught five balls for 69 yards, while Darius Powell finished with five receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown.

Vandy marched the ball 80 yards down the field in seven plays, capped off by a seven-yard run for the score by Seymour, giving the Commodores a 7-0 lead with 5:45 to play in the first quarter.

The teams traded field goals on each of their next series, with Ty Long knocking through a 33-yard attempt for the Blazers in the final minutes of the first, and Carey Spear connecting from 50 yards out early in the second quarter for the Commodores. Long added a 20-yard field goal kick to make the score 10-6 with 9:23 left in the first half.

After a 42-yard kickoff return gave Vanderbilt the ball near midfield, Seymour found the end zone again, this time on a 58-yard touchdown run that put the home team up 17-6. Carta-Samuels added to the lead with a one-yard TD run, finishing off a nine-play drive that gave Vandy a 24-6 lead at intermission.

In the third quarter, UAB tacked on another field goal by Long, this one from 37 yards out. Vandy responded with an eight-yard touchdown run by Tate late in the frame and a one-yard TD pass from Carta-Samuels to Fitz Lassing early in the fourth to make the score 38-9.

The Blazers answered with a five-play scoring drive, ending with a 29-yard scoring strike from Perry to Powell. After a successful two-point conversion, the Vandy lead was cut to 38-17 with just under 13 minutes to play in regulation.

Carta-Samuels hooked up with Matthews on a five-yard TD pass play, followed by an eight-yard TD run by Patton Robinette to give Vandy a comfortable 52-17 advantage with just under six minutes left in regulation.

On their ensuing possession, the Blazers finished off the affair with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Perry to Jamari Staples with just over a minute left in regulation.

Vanderbilt, which scored touchdowns on all six red-zone opportunities, generated 540 yards of total offense, compared to 362 for the visitors.
