Recap: California vs. Arizona

Berkeley, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - B.J. Denker accounted for 305 total yards and four touchdowns to lead the Arizona Wildcats past the California Golden Bears, 33-28, in a Pac-12 Conference showdown at Memorial Stadium.

Denker completed 24-of-38 passes for 261 yards and a score for Arizona (6-2, 3-2 Pac-12) while adding 44 yards on the ground and a career-high three rushing touchdowns. Ka'Deem Carey was also stellar in the rushing attack with 152 yards on 32 carries, while Terrence Miller (five catches, 88 yards) and Samajie Grant (nine catches, 78 yards) were both active as receivers.

For Cal (1-8, 0-6), Jared Goff completed 34-of-56 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns, but he was also plagued by a pair of interceptions. Kenny Lawler finished with six catches for a career-high 72 yards and three scores.

Cal orchestrated a 12-play, 75-yard drive on the game's opening possession, which ended with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Goff to Khalfani Muhammad. Arizona retaliated less than three minutes later with a nine-yard scoring rush by Denker.

The Wildcats took a 9-7 lead late in the first quarter when the defense stopped Darren Ervin in Cal's end zone for a safety.

Jake Smith drilled a 53-yard field goal early in the second quarter to extend Arizona's advantage. It was the longest field goal for the Wildcats' since Nick Folk also made a 53-yarder in 2004. They struck again a few minutes later when Denker hooked up with Nate Phillips on a 21-yard scoring strike.

The Golden Bears put an end to the Wildcats' run with 6:04 left in the first half when Goff hooked up with Lawler on a 17-yard scoring strike to bring their deficit to five, 19-14.

Smith attempted another long field goal for the Wildcats as time expired in the first half but couldn't connect on a 55-yarder.

Arizona further padded its lead on the first possession of the second half, marching 75 yards in eight plays, with Denker finishing off the drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge.

Cal cut its deficit to five later in the third quarter when Goff and Lawler hooked up on three-yard touchdown pass. The scoring play capped off a 12-play, 80-yard drive for the Golden Bears, with the key play coming on a nine-yard rush by Goff on a 3rd-and-7.

Arizona brought its lead back to two scores late in the third quarter following a 14-yard touchdown run by Denker. The Wildcats operated on a short field following a Goff interception.

Cal made things interesting with under two minutes remaining in the game, as Goff and Lawler connected again on a 29-yard scoring strike to bring its deficit to just five, 33-28. The Golden Bears attempted an on-side kick but failed to recover, and Arizona ran out the clock from there.

Neither team was efficient on third down, as both the Wildcats and the Golden Bears converted just 4-of-16 attempts.
