Recap: Arizona State vs. Wisconsin

Tempe, AZ (Sports Network) - A controversial ending resulted in the Arizona State Sun Devils beating the 20th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers, 32-30, on Saturday.

Wisconsin quarterback Joel Stave, after leading the Badgers into field goal range with time winding down, tried to place the ball in the center of the field for a potential game-winning kick. It appeared that Stave took a knee before putting the ball down, but an Arizona State player jumped on top of the ball claiming it was a fumble. The clock kept running, though, and the refs failed to make a decision. The Badgers couldn't get another play off after scrambling to the line of scrimmage.

"We just jumped on it and I guess time ran out so we won. I was confused back there," Arizona State defensive back Alden Darby said.

The drive started from the Wisconsin 17-yard line with 1:36 to play. Jeff Duckworth caught a 51-yard pass along the left sideline on 3rd-and-4. Jared Abbrederis hauled in a six-yard pass on the next third down situation, moving the ball to the 13-yard line and setting up the wild ending.

Marion Grice carried the ball 22 times for 84 yards and four touchdowns for the Sun Devils (2-0), who recorded a 55-0 shutout of Sacramento State last time out. The senior running back also caught five passes for 50 yards.

Taylor Kelly completed 29-of-51 passes for 352 yards and an interception for Arizona State, which improved to 9-0 against the Big Ten at home. Jaelen Strong caught six passes for 104 yards.

Stave connected on 15-of-30 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown for the Badgers (2-1), who had started the season with back-to-back shutouts.

Melvin Gordon carried the ball 15 times for 193 yards and two scores in defeat.

Wisconsin was down 32-24 following a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown runs by Grice. The Badgers started from their own 25 with 8:50 to play. A fake punt kept the drive alive, with Chris Borland hooking up with Jacob Pedersen for a 23-yard gain. Abbrederis followed with a 31-yard catch to put the visitors in the red zone. James White kept the march going with a big catch on third down, and Gordon capped the 11-play drive with a 1-yard TD run. The two-point conversion failed and Wisconsin trailed by two.

The Badgers got the ball back after forcing Arizona State to punt.

Arizona State's first drive of the game stalled at the Wisconsin 2-yard line. Kelly's pass on fourth down fell incomplete.

The Sun Devils, though, did score the only points of the first quarter. Zane Gonzalez made a 34-yard field goal with 4:08 left.

Jacob Pedersen's 2-yard TD catch early in the second quarter made it 7-3 Wisconsin.

On the ensuing Arizona State possession, Beau Allen returned a fumble for a touchdown.

Grice responded with a 1-yard touchdown run to cut the gap to 14-10. Gonzalez added a 19-yard field goal later in the period to make it a one-point game at the half.

Gordon returned the opening kickoff of the second half 80 yards for a score.

The Sun Devils got that touchdown back on their final drive of the third stanza. Grice capped an 11-play, 91-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run. The two- point conversion failed to keep it 21-19 Wisconsin.

Kyle French made a 34-yard field goal early in the fourth to make it 24-19.

Grice scored from two yards out on the ensuing Arizona State possession. The score remained 25-24 following a failed two-point conversion.

The margin increased to 32-24 on Grice's 12-yard TD run with 8:50 remaining.
