Recap: Arizona State vs. USC

Tempe, AZ (Sports Network) - Taylor Kelly threw for 351 yards and three touchdowns as the Arizona State Sun Devils beat up on the USC Trojans, 62-41, in a Pac-12 South Division matchup at Sun Devil Stadium.

Kelly completed 23-of-34 pass attempts and was intercepted once, while Marion Grice gave the Sun Devils (3-1, 1-1 Pac-12) two touchdowns on the ground and two more through the air on seven receptions.

The 62 points tied for the most-ever allowed by USC, the same number put up by Oregon in a 62-51 decision on Nov. 3, 2012. The point total for ASU was the team's highest in a Pac-12 decision since 2002.

Tre Madden led the USC (3-2, 0-2) rushing attack with 128 yards and a score on 20 carries, adding three receptions for 66 yards and two TDs. Justin Davis reached the end zone three times on 10 rushing attempts, while quarterback Cody Kessler converted 20-of-29 for 295 yards and two scores, although he was also sacked four times and had two passes picked off.

Star receiver Marqise Lee caught seven passes for a team-best 92 yards, but he also suffered an injury in the contest.

ASU took the opening kickoff 75 yards in 10 plays, culminating with a one-yard TD run by Michael Eubank.

The Trojans responded later in the first quarter with a 26-yard TD run by Davis to tie the contest at 7-7. The visitors took the lead on a 10-yard TD reception by Madden early in the second period.

The Sun Devils then closed out the first half with 13 straight points thanks to an 11-yard touchdown reception by Grice and a pair of field goals (28 and 21 yards) by Zane Gonzalez.

USC regained the advantage less than a minute into the second half when Madden raced into the end zone from 24 yards out. But again, ASU went on the attack, this time on both sides of the ball.

First, Kelly combined with D.J. Foster on a 74-yard touchdown pass, while Alden Darby contributed with a 46-yard interception return for a score. An eight-yard touchdown catch by Grice was followed by a nine-yard scoring run by the senior running back to make the score 48-21 at the end of three period of play.

The Trojans refused to go away quietly though, as Madden reeled in a 48-yard TD pass and Davis crossed the goal line on a 15-yard run, but kicker Andre Heidari failed on the first PAT, leaving the visitors with a 48-34 deficit with just under 10 minutes left on the clock.

Grice and Deantre Lewis then put the game out of reach for the Sun Devils as they scored on runs of 28 and one yards, respectively.

Davis, who finished with 122 yards on the ground, did add a 58-yard rushing touchdown, but it was too little, too late.

The Trojans, who permitted a whopping 612 yards of total offense to ASU, entered the week ranked fourth in the nation in total defense, allowing just 230.5 ypg.
