Recap: Arizona State vs. Stanford

Tempe, AZ ( - Tyler Gaffney found the end zone three times and Ty Montgomery twice as No. 7 Stanford won its second straight Pac-12 title with a convincing 38-14 win over No. 11 Arizona State.

Gaffney carried the ball 22 times for 133 yards while Montgomery had a rushing and receiving touchdown for the Cardinal (11-2), who won their final three games of the season after losing to USC.

"We stayed aggressive. We stayed aggressive the whole time," said Stanford head coach David Shaw. "That's what I love about being in the Pac-12. You have to respect, two really good teams playing a physical, tough game.

Kevin Hogan went 12-of-18 for 277 yards and a score as Stanford will be making its 14th appearance in the Rose Bowl On New Year's Day.

"This is unbelievable," said Gaffney. "I talked to them [fellow teammates] and they told me how it felt to be out here and actually experience it, you can't describe it."

Stanford's opponent will by Michigan State, which defeated Ohio State in the Big Ten championship on Saturday.

Taylor Kelly was 17-of-25 for 173 yards and a score while D.J. Foster had a rushing touchdown and finished with 62 yards on eight carries for the Sun Devils (10-3), who were looking for their first conference championship since sharing it in 2007 with USC.

"It's been the most frustrating thing that I've had to deal with as a coach," said Arizona State head coach Todd Graham. "We work so hard on offense and defense and to play like that in these types of games is so frustrating."

Each team had a quick score to start the game, as Gaffney took a handoff on the second snap and went down the left sideline for a 69-yard score just over a minute in.

Arizona State countered on its ensuing touch, as Foster took a handoff up the middle and raced to the end zone on a 51-yard score to tie the game just over three minutes in.

The Cardinal came back with another scoring drive, this one covering 60 yards in eight plays and finished off on a 1-yard run from Gaffney into the end zone for a 14-7 advantage.

The Sun Devils crossed midfield on their next drive, but had to punt and the Cardinal got the ball back at their own 11.

A 42-yard catch from Devon Cajuste got the ball across midfield, and the team scored when Hogan faked a handoff up the middle before giving the ball to Montgomery, who came from the right before taking the ball to the left on a 22-yard score and a 21-7 lead on the first play of the second quarter.

After a three-and-out from the Sun Devils, a short punt saw Stanford get the ball back at the Arizona State 37, leading to a 1-yard score from Gaffney and a 28-7 lead.

The Sun Devils later cut into their deficit, as a short pass to the right saw Foster catch the ball and follow his blockers on a 65-yard score and a 28-14 game with 3:52 left in the first half.

Starting the second half with the ball, Arizona State got into scoring position and lined up for a 31-yard field goal attempt, but Zane Gonzalez missed it to the right and Stanford took advantage with a 30-yard field goal from Jordan Williamson for a 31-14 lead with 6:12 to play.

The Sun Devils then put together a huge drive, covering 74 yards and 17 plays. The team faced a 1st-and-goal at the 9, but Deantre Lewis was thrown for a 3- yard loss on a carry. After an 11-yard catch down to the 1 by Kevin Ozier, Michael Eubank and De'Marieya Nelson were stopped at the line and Stanford got the ball back.

On 3rd-and-6 at their own 5, the Cardinal got a 78-yard catch-and-run from Cajuste, setting up a 24-yard touchdown catch to put the game away with just over 12 minutes to play.
