After six combined possessions without a score between each team to start the game, Utah took a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter with a 36-yard field goal from Andy Phillips.

Phillips would add a 32-yard field goal early in the second quarter after the Utes stalled at the BYU 14-yard line.

Utah would score once more before halftime, this time with a one-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to Anthony Denham. With the score the Utes led 13-0 going into the locker room.

BYU was able to cut into Utah's lead for the first time on a 32-yard field goal from Justin Sorensen early in the third quarter.

Sorensen added a 31-yard field goal later in the period, finishing off a 13-play, 61-yard drive.

Wilson tossed a two-yard touchdown pass to Karl Williams early in the fourth quarter to give the Utes a two-touchdown lead.

BYU was able to pull itself within striking range midway through the fourth quarter with a one-yard touchdown run from Michael Alisa. BYU then forced the Utes to punt but the ensuing drive ended when Hill was intercepted by Michael Walker. After another Utah punt, BYU took over with 32 seconds remaining but Hill threw four-straight incompletions as the Utes escaped with the victory.

BYU had the edge in total yards (443-402) but converted just 1-of-5 attempts in the red zone into touchdowns. Utah was just 1-of-14 on third down attempts but did collect five sacks.
