Recap: Virginia vs. BYU

Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - A 13-yard touchdown run by Kevin Parks with 2:36 remaining put Virginia over the top as the Cavaliers defeated the BYU Cougars, 19-16, in the 2013 opener for both programs at Scott Stadium.

In a game that was delayed for more than two hours due to severe weather, Virginia (1-0) quarterback David Watford converted 18-of-32 for 114 yards and a touchdown, with Darius Jennings reeling in seven passes for 62 yards and a score in the triumph.

The Cougars (0-1) were paced by Taysom Hill who struggled a bit passing the ball, converting just 13-of-40 for 175 yards and a score, while also tossing an interception and being sacked three times. Hill was credited with 42 yards and a TD on 11 rushing attempts, second only to Jamaal Williams who logged a game-high 144 yards on 33 carries.

Neither team scored in the first quarter, but following a lengthy break at the start of the second frame because of lightning in the area, BYU finally got on the board as Hill found J.D. Falslev with a four-yard scoring pass.

With the first half winding down, the Cavaliers managed to cut the deficit to four points when Ian Frye knocked through a 53-yard field goal.

Virginia moved out to a 12-7 edge in the third, thanks to an 11-yard TD pass from Watford to Jennings and a safety near the end of the frame.

Midway through the fourth quarter the Cougars mounted an 11-play, 92-yard drive, culminating with a one-yard rushing TD by Hill, but a failed two-point conversion left the visitors with just a 13-12 advantage.

BYU kicker Justin Sorensen pushed the lead to four points on the strength of a 36-yard field goal with just over five minutes remaining in regulation.

After the Cavs were forced to punt, BYU had a chance to run considerable time off the clock, but Hill was picked off at his own 13-yard line and from there Virginia and Parks needed just one play to regain the advantage.

The Cougars had two more chances to battle back, but they turned the ball over on downs and then ran out of time, sealing the victory for the hosts.

The Cavaliers captured the win despite generating only 223 yards of total offense and converting just 6-of-20 on third down.

Virginia, which has now won just three times in the last 11 outings overall, leads the all-time series between the schools by a mark of 3-1.
