Recap: San Jose St vs. Navy

San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Keenan Reynolds scored seven rushing touchdowns, the most by a quarterback in FBS history, including a 25-yard scamper down the left side in the third overtime session as the Navy Midshipmen pulled out a spectacular 58-52 win over the San Jose State Spartans in non-conference play at Spartan Stadium.

Reynolds carried the ball 36 times and generated a staggering 240 yards on the ground for the Midshipmen (7-4) as they won their third straight game and the fourth in the last five outings. Reynolds also converted 4-of-6 passes for 46 yards and another touchdown, a three-yard connection with Darius Staten.

The Spartans (5-6), who were aiming to become bowl eligible for the second straight season, were led by David Fales who converted 42-of-56 passes for 440 yards and five touchdowns in the first triple-overtime affair in program history. Chandler Jones caught seven passes for 101 yards and a score as he became the school's all-time leader in receptions, now with 240.

Jarrod Lawson carried the ball 26 times for SJSU, leading to 98 yards and a score, while Thomas Tucker accounted for 62 yards and one TD on the ground, as well as nine catches for a game-high 107 yards and another score.

The game got off to a slow start, with a 41-yard Austin Lopez field goal for the Spartans accounting for the only points in the first quarter.

In the second frame things started to heat up when Fales combined with Tucker on a 25-yard scoring pass. However, a rare miss on the PAT left the hosts with a 9-0 advantage.

Navy responded with a 10-play, 84-yard drive that was capped by a 12-yard TD run by Reynolds.

On their ensuing possession the Spartans marched right back down the field and reached the end zone on a two-yard run by Lawson. This time Lopez knocked through the PAT.

Before the half could come to a close, Navy kicker Nick Sloan made good on a 37-yard field goal, leaving SJSU with a 16-10 edge at the break.

Navy put together a pair of touchdown drives in the third to take the lead, as Reynolds scooted into the end zone on a three-yard run and then hit Staten with one of his four completed passes.

Trailing by eight, Fales and the Spartans responded when Jones reeled in a 23- yard TD, but a failed two-point try left San Jose State with a 24-22 deficit heading into the fourth quarter.

Reynolds notched touchdown runs of 38 and 20 yards in the period, but not before Fales found Tyler Winston with a four-yard scoring strike. The second TD run by Reynolds was unimpeded, with the belief that SJSU had to preserve the clock in order to put together a much-needed scoring drive in the final 2:38 of regulation.

Trailing 38-30 with time running down, Fales directed a masterful 75-yard, 14- play drive that culminated with a TD pass to Kyle Nunn in the corner of the end zone with no time remaining. Down by two, Fales then hit Jones with a successful two-point conversion to send the game into the first overtime session.

Fales and Nunn hooked up again in the initial bonus period, resulting in a 10- yard TD, but Reynolds was more than ready to respond for the visitors with a 25-yard touchdown run.

Tied at 45-45, a second overtime period saw Reynolds find his way over the goal line on a seven-yard run, while Tucker countered for the hosts on a five- yard run.

San Jose State had the first possession of the third overtime and with the ball inside the five-yard line, Fales rolled out to his right and threw across his body on third down, but the pass was picked off in the end zone by Parrish Gaines and on their first play from scrimmage the Midshipmen put an end to the long night.

Navy, which has already accepted a bid to the Armed Forces Bowl this season, survived despite allowing 600 yards of total offense to the Spartans. Reynolds not only set the mark for rushing TDs by a QB in the outing, he also became the fourth signal caller in Navy history to both run for 1,000 yards and throw for 1,000 in the same season. Reynolds is also the ninth QB in history to have at least 20 rushing TDs in a season, and with 26 now he is one shy of tying the NCAA record.

While it was a tough loss to swallow, Fales became SJSU's career leader in both passing TDs (60) and passing yards (7,835).
