Recap: North Texas vs. Middle Tennessee
Denton, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The North Texas Mean Green rushed for 303 yards as they ran past the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, 34-7, in a Conference USA matchup at Apogee Stadium.
Brandin Byrd led North Texas (3-3, 1-1 C-USA) in rushing with 139 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries as the Mean Green broke out of a two-game slump. Reggie Pegram added two scores and 88 yards on 22 carries while Antoinne Jimmerson contributed 72 yards on 10 carries. Derek Thompson passed for 113 yards and a pair of interceptions on 13-of-19 passing for North Texas.
Austin Grammer struggled through the air for Middle Tennessee (3-4, 1-2), completing just 6-of-22 passes for 36 yards and an interception. Grammer did manage to rush for a career-high 106 yards and a score on 15 attempts. The Blue Raiders have lost three in a row after a promising 3-1 start to the season.
The Mean Green struck first as they strung together an 11-play, 71-yard drive late in the first quarter which resulted in a five-yard touchdown run by Pegram. Early in the second quarter, Middle Tennessee answered back as Grammer took in a five-yard score on the ground.
North Texas then scored 17 unanswered points in the remainder of the second quarter. Byrd ran in a one-yard touchdown to cap off a long drive and on the following possession for Middle Tennessee, Grammer's pass was intercepted by Lairamie Lee and returned 20 yards for a touchdown. After a Zach Paul 21-yard field goal for North Texas with 30 seconds left in the first half, the Mean Green carried a 24-7 lead into the break.
The Mean Green continued their dominance in the second half. The Blue Raiders were unable to score at all while North Texas added a 22-yard field goal from Paul and a four-yard touchdown run by Pegram late in the fourth quarter.
North Texas tallied 416 yards of total offense compared to just 205 for the Blue Raiders.Game Notes
