Recap: Ohio U vs. Marshall

Athens, OH (Sports Network) - Tyler Tettleton threw for 266 yards and Beau Blankenship scored a pair of touchdowns in the second half as the Ohio Bobcats held on for a 34-31 victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd at Peden Stadium.

Tettleton completed 25-of-38 pass attempts and also had a touchdown while Blankenship rushed for 36 yards on 16 carries for Ohio (2-1). Donte Foster caught eight passes for 80 yards and Matt Waters had a team-high 83 yards on six receptions. The win gives the Bobcats a third-straight victory in the annual Battle of the Bell rivalry game.

Marshall (2-1) was handed its first loss despite getting 366 yards passing from Rakeem Cato. The Thundering Herd signal caller completed 30-of-45 pass attempts with a touchdown and an interception, while adding a touchdown on the ground. Tommy Shuler (95 yards) and Demetrius Evans (59 yards) each brought in nine passes while Gator Hoskins had four receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown.

After forcing and recovering a fumble on Marshall's first possession, Ohio scored a touchdown on a four-yard pass from Tettleton to Troy Hill. Tettleton went 4-of-5 for 48 yards on the drive.

The Bobcats would have a chance to extend their lead but Matt Green missed a 45-yard field goal attempt. Following the miss, the Herd put together a 72-yard drive that ended with a one-yard touchdown run from Kevin Grooms.

Ohio drove to the Marshall 6-yard line midway through the second quarter. However Tettleton was sacked and lost nine yards on third-and-goal. After the sack the Bobcats settled for a 33-yard field goal from Green.

Steward Butler fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Toran Davis recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. After the score the Bobcats' lead grew to 17-7.

A 22-yard field goal from Justin Haig as time expired in the first half allowed the Herd to enter the locker room trailing by just a touchdown.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter. First Blankenship scored on a three-yard touchdown run to give the Bobcats a 24-10 lead. However Marshall hung around with a three-yard touchdown run from Essray Taliaferro on its next possession.

Blankenship found his way into the end zone again early in the fourth quarter, this time on a two-yard run, as the Bobcats extended their lead once again.

Marshall wasn't about to let Ohio run away with the contest, as Cato completed a 38-yard touchdown pass to Hoskins to pull the Herd to within a touchdown yet again. Cato completed 5-of-6 pass attempts during the drive.

Marshall forced the Bobcats to punt on their next possession. However Cato was intercepted on the very next play.

Taking over from the Marshall 33-yard line, Ohio was able to take a 10-point lead with a 29-yard field goal from Green.

Cato once again kept Marshall's hopes alive as he capped off a 10-play, 66-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run with 29 seconds to play. However the ensuing onside kick attempt was recovered by the Bobcats, who were able to run out the clock and secure the victory.
