Recap: Marshall vs. TX-San Antonio

Huntington, WV (SportsNetwork.com) - Rakeem Cato finished with 279 yards and two touchdowns through the air as the Marshall Thundering Herd completed a 34-10 rout of the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners in a Conference USA matchup at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

Cato completed 22-of-32 pass attempts for Marshall (3-2, 1-0 C-USA) as it snapped a two-game losing slide and improved to 3-0 at home on the season. Tommy Shuler reeled in a team-best five catches for 52 yards while Essray Taliaferro led the Thundering Herd on the ground with 58 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Evan McKelvey registered six total tackles and was one of three Marshall defenders to record an interception.

Eric Soza struggled under center for UTSA (2-4, 1-1), completing only 10-of-26 attempts for 130 yards and three interceptions. Although 11 different Roadrunners made at least one catch, Kenny Bias paced the group with only 27 receiving yards. UTSA was limited to only 97 yards rushing on 29 attempts as it suffered its first-ever loss to a C-USA rival in league play.

The Thundering Herd put it out of reach early on with a 24-0 run to start the game. Marshall got on the board just over four minutes after the opening kickoff as Justin Haig connected on a 33-yard field goal attempt. Cato made it 10-0 as he found Devon Johnson for a 17-yard touchdown pass at the 7:06 mark of the first quarter.

Marshall scored its first rushing touchdown with just over two minutes left in the opening quarter as Taliaferro concluded a nine-play, 89-yard drive with a four-yard run across the goal line. Steward Butler punched it in from a yard away with only 5:05 left in the first half to give the hosts an even more comfortable advantage.

UTSA ended the run with under a minute left before halftime as Sean Ianno made a 24-yard field goal.

After a scoreless third quarter, Haig made a 31-yard field goal try in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to end the drought. The Roadrunners finally found the end zone as Soza rushed one yard for a touchdown with 9:44 left to play.

The Herd added some insurance with under four minutes showing on the game clock as Cato tossed a four-yard touchdown pass to Demetrius Evans.

Marshall held a 404-254 edge in total yards of offense and did not commit a single turnover in the contest. The Herd are one of three teams in the C-USA East Division with a perfect record in conference play.
