Recap: Rice vs. Louisiana Tech

Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Charles Ross ran for 215 yards and a school- record five touchdowns on 27 carries to lead the Rice Owls over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, 52-14, in a Conference USA battle at Rice Stadium.

For the Owls (7-3,5-1 C-USA), Taylor McHargue finished with 167 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 13-of-23 passing. Dennis Parks caught three passes for 67 yards and a score. Luke Turner carried the ball nine times for 76 yards and score while Jowan Davis also finished with 76 yards rushing on 15 carries for the Owls, who won for the sixth time in their last seven outings.

Ryan Higgins threw for 138 yards with a touchdown and an interception on 9- of-15 passing for the Bulldogs (4-6,3-3). He relieved Scotty Young who managed just 43 yards and an interception on 6-of-15 passing in one half of work. Tevin King was the leading rusher for the Bulldogs with just 43 yards on the ground on 13 carries. Sterling Griffin caught two balls for 80 yards and a score.

The Owls struck early, scoring on their opening possession just minutes into the game. McHargue connected with Parks for a 41-yard touchdown pass. After the teams combined for three-straight fumbles, the Owls added another score late in the first quarter when Ross ran it in from two yards out to give them a 14-0 lead with just under four minutes to play in the opening period. A 30- yard field goal early in the second quarter put the home team up 17-0. The Owls added a touchdown late in the half on another run by Ross, this from five yard out, to put the Owls up 24-0 going into halftime.

Ross scored again midway through the third on a two-yard touchdown run. The Bulldogs finally got on the scoreboard when Higgins found Griffin on a 74-yard touchdown strike with 6:27 left in the third that made the score 31-7.

In the fourth quarter, Ross continued to shine, finding the end zone twice more, first from one-yard out and then from 19 yards out, to give his team a 45-7 lead. Turner added another score on the ground when he banged it in from the one-yard line and finished the scoring for Rice. Louisiana Tech added a score in the final two minutes of regulation on a nine-yard touchdown run by Marlon Seets to set the final score at 52-14.

The Owl finished the game with 415 yards rushing while holding the Bulldogs to just 146 yards on the ground. Rice also dominated time of possession, holding the ball for just over 40 minutes to just under 20 for Louisiana Tech.
