Recap: Tulsa vs. Iowa State

Tulsa, OK (Sports Network) - Sam B. Richardson threw for 255 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Iowa State took advantage of four Tulsa turnovers as the Cyclones upended the Golden Hurricane, 38-21, at H.A. Chapman Stadium

Richardson went 26-for-42 with an interception as Iowa State (1-2) was able to redeem itself from a 31-17 loss to Tulsa (1-3) in the Liberty Bowl a season ago. The Cyclones improved to 3-1 all-time against Tulsa.

Aaron Wimberly rushed for 137 yards on 19 carries while Jeff Woody had six carries and scored on three of them. E.J. Bibbs and Jarvis West each hauled in touchdown receptions.

Cody Green passed for 237 yards and two touchdowns but fumbled twice in the opening half and was intercepted late as Tulsa was attempting a comeback. Trey Watts ran for 38 yards and a touchdown and Thomas Roberson caught six balls for 63 yards and a pair of scores.

Wimberly's 35-yard run down to the Tulsa 1 sparked an early ISU score, which came midway through the opening period. Wimberly was originally awarded a touchdown, but officials correctly reversed the call, claiming he touched down short of the goal line. Two plays later, Woody marched in untouched for the game's first score.

Tulsa lost fumbles on two of its next three possessions, but ISU could not convert any points off the turnovers as Richardson's pass following Green's fumble was deflected and picked off by Shawn Jackson and Cole Netten's 49-yard field goal struck the left upright after Ja-Terian Douglas' miscue.

Netten also missed a 46-yard try on the Cyclones' previous series, which started when Richardson and Wimberly connected for a 31-yard pickup.

The home team took advantage of the missed field goals and scored a pair of touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead late in the first half. Green's strike to Jordan James down the middle to the ISU 1 set up Watts' plunge off tackle to the left to knot the score and after forcing a Cyclones' three-and-out, Green found Roberson in the back of the end zone for the go-ahead score.

After the ensuing kickoff, Richardson had 1:33 to navigate down the field and he did just that, completing a touchdown strike to West from 18 yards out with 15 seconds left before halftime. The teams went into the locker rooms tied at 14-14.

The Cyclones carried their momentum from late in the first half into the second, as Richardson took the offense right down the field and found Bibbs for a 16-yard touchdown at the 12:36 mark. Woody's short touchdown run later in the quarter gave ISU a 28-14 advantage.

Netten made up for his two earlier misses with a 40-yard kick right down the middle early in the fourth to put ISU ahead by three scores.

Roberson's diving catch in the end zone from 21 yards out on 4th-and-5 brought Tulsa back to 31-21, but Green's late interception ruined any hopes of a comeback.
