Recap: Fla Atlantic vs. Tulane

Boca Raton, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jaquez Johnson ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries to lead the Florida Atlantic Owls to a 34-17 victory over the Tulane Green Wave in a Conference USA clash at FAU Stadium

Johnson also converted 10-of-21 through the air for another 107 yards for the Owls (3-6, 2-4 C-USA) as they snapped a two-game slide. Damian Fortner added 39 yards rushing and a touchdown on 11 carries, while William Dukes caught three balls for 68 yards and a score, as the Owls won their first game under former offensive coordinator and interim head coach Brian Wright.

Wright was elevated to the position after head coach Carl Pelini and defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis resigned this week amidst an investigation into illegal drug use.

Nick Montana threw for just 73 yards and no touchdowns and was picked off three times on 7-of-22 passing as Tulane (6-3, 4-1) had a four-game win streak come to an end. Devin Powell also saw time at quarterback and finished 4-of-9 for 34 yards and another pick. Orleans Darkwa ran for 45 yards and a score on 11 carries.

The Green Wave got on the scoreboard early when Lorenzo Doss intercepted Johnson and returned it 69 yards for the score. The Owls tied the score when Johnson ran it in from one yard out with just under six minutes left in the opening period.

Tulane had the only points of the second quarter, first with a 22-yard field goal by Cairo Santos, then thanks to a Darkwa four-yard touchdown run in the final minute of the half as the Green Wave went into the break leading 17-7.

FAU went on the attack in the second half, closing the meeting on a 27-0 scoring run. The hosts began with a 26-yard field goal by Mitch Anderson, continued with a 30-yard TD pass from receiver Daniel McKinney to William Dukes, followed by a 20-yard field goal by Anderson to begin the fourth quarter.

Ahead by three points, the Owls continued to pile on as Fortner and Johnson reached the end zone on runs of 24 and 49 yards, respectively.

With his three interceptions in the meeting, FAU's D'Joun Smith now leads the nation with seven picks overall in 2013.

Extra Points: Snyder and the Beltway radio wars

If contradiction was an Olympic sport, Chip Kelly would certainly be medal-worthy judging by his performance at the NFL's owners meeting but the Eagles coach might have to settle for silver because Daniel Snyder's critics will take the gold every time.

2015 PREVIEW NL EAST: It's the Nationals and everybody else

There isn't much after that. The Miami Marlins are loaded up for a playoff push -- likely through a wild card spot -- and the New York Mets are up-and- coming but still raw. The Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies, former powerhouses of the division, are going through rebuilds and won't contend anytime soon.
