Recap: FIU vs. UAB

Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Ty Long's 28-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining broke a tie and gave the UAB Blazers a 27-24 win over the FIU Panthers in Conference USA play at FIU Stadium.

Long's field goal, his second following intermission, capped a 10-play, 70- yard drive for the Blazers (2-4, 1-1 C-USA) as they snapped a two-game slide. Running back Darrin Reaves accounted for two touchdowns on the ground, while Jordan Howard registered a game-high 159 yards on 20 carries. Quarterback Austin Brown converted 19-of-30 passes for 188 yards and a score as well.

The Panthers (1-5, 1-1) were paced by Jake Medlock with 302 yards and two touchdowns through the air as he connected on half of his 34 pass attempts, but he was also picked off once and sacked three times.

FIU registered the first points of the night when Medlock hooked up with Ya'Keem Griner on a 15-yard TD pass play midway through the first quarter. Griner tallied five catches for 65 yards in the meeting.

The Blazers then rattled off 21 straight points, beginning with a two-yard TD run by Reaves. Early in the second quarter Brown combined with Kennard Backman on a seven-yard TD pass, then Reaves made his way into the end zone from a yard out to give UAB a 21-7 edge with six minutes to play in the first half.

The Panthers picked up a 27-yard field goal from Austin Taylor at the 2:28 mark of the second and then on the final play of the half Silas Spearman delivered a one-yard TD run to cut the deficit to just four points at the break.

Long's 48-yard field goal in the third quarter pushed the UAB advantage back to seven, but a 13-yard TD pass from Medlock to Lamarq Caldwell with just 2:41 to play in regulation knotted the game at 24-24, setting the stage for the game-winner by Long.

FIU generated a solid 396 yards of total offense, but the squad ended up converting just 4-of-14 on third down.

Game Notes

Marshall - The class of Conference USA

Conference USA has added two new teams this season (Old Dominion and Western Ky) and lost three (Tulsa, East Carolina and Tulane) but it is really a one team league. And that team is Marshall.
