Recap: North Texas vs. Idaho
Denton, TX (Sports Network) - Derek Thompson threw for a career-high 349 yards and two touchdowns as the North Texas Mean Green made easy work of the Idaho Vandals, 40-6, in the 2013 season opener at Apogee Stadium.
Thompson was nearly flawless on the night, completing 23-of-27 passes with zero interceptions for North Texas (1-0). Brelan Chancellor was Thompson's top target, registering 135 yards and a touchdown on six receptions. The team rushed for 187 yards, led by Brandin Byrd with 57 yards and two scores.
Chad Chalich finished 19-of-27 for 230 yards and a touchdown for Idaho (0-1), while Dezmon Epps reeled in seven receptions for 89 yards. Jerrel Brown showed some explosion out of the backfield, rushing for 70 yards on just six carries.
Idaho actually got out to an early lead in this one, as Chalich hooked up with Jake Manley for a six-yard scoring strike less than three minutes into the game, although the ensuing extra point was missed. North Texas responded midway through the first quarter with a Byrd one-yard touchdown run to take a 7-6 lead, and it never looked back from there.
After the Mean Green forced the Vandals to turn the ball over on downs, Thompson delivered an 85-yard touchdown pass to Chancellor to further extend their lead.
North Texas struck again midway through the second half on a one-yard touchdown run by Mark Lewis. Following a missed extra point, the Mean Green held a 20-6 advantage.
The Mean Green added one more touchdown before the end of the half on a Byrd 27-yard scamper, although yet another failed extra point attempt kept the score at 26-6.
North Texas picked up where it left off after halftime when Reggie Pegram rushed in a touchdown from two yards out.
The blowout continued early in the fourth quarter when Thompson connected on a 30-yard touchdown pass to Darius Terrell.
The Mean Green tallied 591 yards of total offense and were outstanding on third down, converting 8-of-14.Game Notes
