Recap: Southern Miss vs. North Texas

Hattiesburg, MS (SportsNetwork.com) - Derek Thompson threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns as the North Texas Mean Green topped the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 55-14, in a Conference USA clash at M.M. Roberts Stadium.

Thompson converted 18-of-27 passing and was intercepted twice as the Mean Green (5-3. 3-1 C-USA) won their third straight outing. Reggie Pegram ran for 74 yards and two scores on 19 carries, while Brandin Byrd also scored twice on the ground, gaining 61 yards on 20 carries. Brelan Chancellor pulled in four passes for 127 yards and a score while Carlos Harris grabbed seven receptions for 87 yards. Antoinne Jimmerson registered both a rushing and a receiving touchdown on the night, posting 30 yards on seven carries and catching one pass for 15 yards.

Nick Mullens led the Golden Eagles (0-7, 0-3) with a touchdown, three interceptions and 210 yards through the air on 12-of-31 passing. Dominique Sullivan caught just two balls but finished with 97 yards and a touchdown. George Payne was the team's leading rusher with 44 yards and a TD on nine carries. The Golden Eagles are still in search of their first win since 2011, having dropped 19 straight decisions, the longest active skid in FBS.

The Mean Green got on the board in a big way when Thompson connected with Chancellor on a 46-yard touchdown pass at the 8:15 mark of the first quarter. They tacked on another score as the quarter was winding down when Pegram reached the end zone from two yards out. The PAT failed however, so the visitors had to settle for a 13-0 lead with 19 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles responded with a big play of their own, when Mullens found Sullivan for a 59-yard touchdown strike with just under 11 minutes to play in the half to make the score 13-7.

The rest of the half was dominated by the Mean Green, who closed out with a 28-0 run. First, Byrd delivered a one-yard scoring run, then Thompson threw a 15-yard scoring pass to Jimmerson with 4:23 to play in the half. That was followed by Thompson running it in himself from the three-yard line and the defense intercepting Mullens on the first play of the next series to set up the offense at the USM 13-yard line. Jimmerson scored his second touchdown of the quarter on a six-yard run that put North Texas up 41-7 heading into the break.

The only other score for the Golden Eagles came early in the third stanza when Payne crossed the goal line from two yards out to cut the Mean Green lead to 41-14.

North Texas responded with two more touchdown drives as Pegram picked up a one-yard TD on the ground and Byrd registered an eight-yard score early in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

The Mean Green finished the night with 529 total yards, more than double the 249 put up by the Golden Eagles. North Texas dominated time of possession, controlling the action for nearly 42 minutes.
