Recap: Southern Miss vs. Texas State

Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Led by a defense that forced three turnovers on the night, the Texas State Bobcats were able to hold on to a 22-15 win over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in the 2013 season opener at M.M. Roberts Stadium.

Texas State (1-0) came out victorious despite gaining just 215 yards of total offense. Tyler Arndt completed 13-of-19 passes for 111 yards and rushed for 23 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Moore went just 1-of-3 but threw a touchdown pass to Robert Lowe.

Allan Bridgford was busy for Southern Miss (0-1), going 28-of-53 for 377 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Rickey Bradley hauled in seven receptions for 193 yards in his team debut, and Tyre'oune Holmes (12 rec, 96 yards) also had a strong day receiving.

The first big play for the Bobcats' defense came early on in the contest, as Craig Mager scooped up a fumble and returned it 44 yards for a touchdown.

The Bobcats extended their lead to 14-0 midway through the second quarter when Moore found Lowe for a 23-yard touchdown. Corey Acosta kicked a 41-yard field goal for USM late in the second quarter to put it on the board before halftime.

The Golden Eagles made a run late in the third quarter, starting with a safety. Following the free kick, a 59-yard pass from Bridgford to Bradley set up a six-yard touchdown reception by James Cox to bring their deficit to just two, 14-12.

USM took its first lead of the game with under six minutes to play in the fourth quarter following a 36-yard field goal by Acosta, but Texas State retaliated three minutes later when Arndt rushed in a 17-yard touchdown to regain the advantage. A successful two-point conversion gave the Bobcats a seven-point cushion.

Bridgford was intercepted in the waning seconds of the game as the Bobcats sealed the win.

Texas State has now won two straight season openers on the road against Conference USA opponents, also defeating Houston to start the 2012 campaign (30-13).
