Recap: New Mexico vs. New Mexico St

Albuquerque, NM (SportsNetwork.com) - Kasey Carrier ran for 126 yards and scored three touchdowns as the New Mexico Lobos crushed the New Mexico State Aggies, 66-17, in the Rio Grande Rivalry at University Stadium.

Carrier was credited with 14 rushing attempts for the Lobos (2-3) as the team snapped a two-game slide while taking a break from their Mountain West Conference schedule. Quarterback Cole Gautsche completed half of his four pass attempts for 48 yards and a TD, while also posting a team-best 127 yards and scoring once on 12 carries.

The scoring output for the Lobos was the most since the team opened 2012 with a 66-21 victory over Southern.

The Aggies (0-6), losers of 17 in a row to match Southern Miss for the longest active losing streak in the nation, were paced by quarterback Andrew McDonald who converted 20-of-34 pass attempts for 269 yards, although he was sacked three times and had a pair of passes picked off. Brandon Betancourt produced a game-high 139 rushing yards on 23 attempts.

Carrier took care of the scoring for the Lobos in the first quarter, reaching the end zone on runs of one, one and 11 yards to put the hosts ahead by a 21-0 score with just over four minutes remaining in the period.

New Mexico State responded early in the second when Adam Shapiro crossed the goal line on a four-yard run, capping a 13-play, 75-yard drive.

Unfortunately for the Aggies, the ensuing kickoff went to Carlos Wiggins and it took him mere seconds to race the length of the field for a 100-yard touchdown return, pushing the UNM lead back to three touchdowns at 28-7.

Demarcus Rogers added to the advantage midway through the second frame with his 16-yard TD run for the hosts.

Refusing to go away without a fight, the Aggies turned to McDonald who then took it upon himself to get into the end zone on a one-yard run about three minutes later.

Before the half could end however, Crusoe Gongbay added his name to the scoring list for the Lobos with his one-yard touchdown run, providing the home team with a 42-14 edge at the break.

On their first play of the second half the Aggies turned the ball over deep in their own end, but this time the defense held and limited New Mexico to just a 33-yard field goal. Gautsche then combined with Wiggins on a 33-yard TD pass play to make the score 52-14 with still more than nine minutes left in the third.

NMSU kicker Maxwell Johnson stopped the bleeding momentarily with a 38-yard field goal at the 3:35 mark of the period, but the Lobos continued to pile on in the fourth as Gautsche logged a 15-yard rushing TD and Jhurell Pressley accounted for a 29-yard TD run to close out the onslaught.

One of the top running teams in the nation heading into the weekend, ranked third with an average of 324.5 ypg, the Lobos dialed up a staggering 541 yards on 56 attempts, compiling 608 yards of total offense.

The last victory for NMSU came in the 2012 season opener against Sacramento State, 49-19, in Las Cruces. The most recent road win for the Aggies came in this same rivalry two seasons ago, 42-28, to begin the month of October.
