Recap: Iowa State vs. Iowa

Ames, IA (Sports Network) - Jake Rudock accounted for three touchdowns as the Iowa Hawkeyes reclaimed the Cy-Hawk Trophy with a 27-21 victory over the Iowa State Cyclones in cross-state rivalry game at Jack Trice Stadium.

Rudock completed 14-of-23 attempts for 160 yards and two touchdowns and scored on a one-yard rush for Iowa (2-1), which has won two in a row since falling to Northern Illinois in its season opener. Mark Weisman surpassed the century mark for the third straight contest as he rushed a career-high 35 times for 145 yards. Kevonte Martin-Manley made seven catches for 60 yards and a score. Christian Kirksey anchored the Hawkeyes' defense with 11 total stops.

Sam B. Richardson was not quite as efficient as his counterpart for Iowa State (0-2) as he went 22-of-39 for 260 yards with three touchdowns to two interceptions. Quenton Bundrage caught all three of the touchdown passes and finished with 146 yards on seven catches. Jacque Washington registered a game- high total of 13 tackles for the Cyclones, who were off last week after losing to FCS opponent Northern Iowa at home in their season opener.

Neither side could get anything going in the first quarter. Iowa had a drive end at the Cyclones' 20-yard line when David Irving sacked Rudock and caused a fumble that Cory Morrissey recovered.

Rudock made up for his miscue on the Hawkeyes' next drive as he led the team 66 yards on nine plays before connecting with Martin-Manley for a five-yard touchdown pass with just over 12 minutes remaining in the half.

Iowa held ISU to just six yards on the Cyclones' next two possessions before it added to its lead with a 28-yard field goal by Mike Meyer with under two minutes left before the break. The Hawkeyes' defense came up with a big play the next time they took the field as James Morris picked off Richardson and returned it 27 yards to ISU's 25-yard line. The interception return set Meyer up for a 38-yard field goal that sent the visitors into halftime with a 13-0 lead.

The Cyclones finally got on the scoreboard with 5:28 to go in the third quarter as Richardson hooked up with Bundrage on a 67-yard touchdown pass. The Hawkeyes responded and made it a two possession game as Rudock threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Hillyer on the ninth play of their ensuing drive.

After ISU failed to gain a yard on its next possession, Iowa produced a 15- play, 73-yard drive that was concluded by a one-yard touchdown run by Rudock with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation.

ISU converted a fourth-and-one from its own 26-yard line to keep its next drive alive. Richardson took advantage as he completed a 32-yard pass to Tad Ecby before finding Bundrage for a 26-yard touchdown pass. Cole Netten's successful extra point kick narrowed Iowa's lead to 27-14 with 4:26 showing on the clock.

The Hawkeyes out-gained ISU, 218-59, on the ground and converted 11-of-20 third down opportunities. The Cyclones went 5-of-14 on third down plays and averaged only 2.5 yards per carry.

Iowa is 40-21 versus ISU in the history of the rivalry. ISU won last season's matchup, 9-6.
