Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Mark Weisman rushed for 147 yards as the Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 23-7, in each team's Big Ten Conference opener at TCF Bank Stadium.

Rodrick Williams Jr. led the Gophers in rushing with only 22 yards, while Derrick Engel had five catches for 67 yards and a score.

It was all Iowa in the first half. Midway through the opening quarter, Mike Meyer got the Hawkeyes on the board with a 49-yard field goal. In the second quarter, Rudock managed a four-yard touchdown run and also hit Powell on a short completion that Powell took for a 74-yard score. Iowa led 17-0 at intermission.

Meyer made a 23-yard field goal for the Hawkeyes to increase their lead to 20 early in the third quarter.

Minnesota finally answered back when Nelson found Engel for a 23-yard scoring strike at the 3:06 mark of the third quarter.

Meyer added one more field goal, a 46-yarder with under five minutes left in the game.

The Hawkeyes tallied 464 yards of total offense compared to just 165 yards for Minnesota. James Morris led Iowa's defensive attack with eight tackles, a sack and an interception.
