Recap: Connecticut vs. Maryland

Hartford, CT (Sports Network) - C.J. Brown ran for 122 yards and a touchdown and threw for 277 yards and another score, as the Maryland Terrapins beat the Connecticut Huskies, 32-21, in a non-conference battle at Rentschler Field.

Brandon Ross added 95 rushing yards on 18 carries for the Terrapins (3-0), while Stefon Diggs pulled in five receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown. It was the first visit to Connecticut for Maryland coach Randy Edsall since he left the school for Maryland after leading the Huskies to the 2011 Fiesta Bowl.

Chandler Whitmer was 29-of-46 for a career-high 349 yards and a touchdown for UConn (0-2). Shakim Phillips caught a career-high 10 passes for 178 yards and a score. Lyle McCombs was the leading rusher for the Huskies, getting just 53 yards on 19 carries.

UConn got on the board first with a six-play, 54-yard scoring drive, finished with a Lyle McCombs 5-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. The drive was set up by a fourth down stop by the Husky defense, giving their offense the ball near midfield.

The Terrapins were able to knot the score at 7-7 with an 80-yard touchdown drive, the big play coming on the 41-yard touchdown run by C.J. Brown early in the second.

Brad Craddock then knocked in a 29-yard field goal to put Maryland ahead 10-7. The Huskies answered by taking the next drive all the way to the Terrapin 8-yard line, but the drive stalled there and they had to settle with a 33-yard field goal by Chad Christen which knotted the score at 10-10 with just under four minutes to play in the first half. Maryland finished the half with an 86-yard scoring drive in just over two minutes that ended with a 21- yard field goal by Craddock as time expired, giving the Terrapins the 13-10 advantage at the break.

After intermission, the Huskies were able to force a fumble by Albert Reid on the Terrapins' opening possession of the half, but were unable to turn it into points. Later in the third, Maryland took the ball 80 yards for a touchdown, topped off by a 12-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Diggs midway through the third quarter.

Later in the quarter, the Huskies again forced a fumble and this time capitalized on it with a 34-yard Christen field goal to cut their deficit to 20-10 with 6:02 to play in the third.

After Craddock missed a 50-yard field goal attempt, his defense was able to score on their own when Dexter McDougle intercepted a Whitmer pass and returned it 49 yards for the score, pushing the visitors' advantage to 27-13 with 2:07 remaining in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Maryland defense again put points on the board, as Whitmer was called for intentional grounding in the end zone, resulting in a safety and a 29-13 Terrapin advantage with 8:43 remaining. Craddock would tack on another field goal, this from 40 yards out, to finish Maryland's scoring on the night. UConn responded quickly, with Whitmer hitting Phillips for a 75- yard catch and run touchdown with 4:26 left in the contest. After Whitmer connected with Geremy Davis for the two-point conversion completion, the score stood at 32-21. However The Huskies were unable to score on their final possession.

The Terps turned the ball over three times in the first quarter in UConn territory, twice failing to convert on fourth-and-1. After starting slow, Maryland put up 501 yards of offense, going over 500 yards for the third-straight game. Though the Maryland defense gave up 383 yards of offense, it held UConn to just 4-of-15 on third downs and registered five sacks.
