The Jaguars set themselves up for a chip shot field goal late in the first half, but Aleem Sunanon missed a 22-yarder, which proved costly in the end.

Troy opened the second half with a five-play, 70-yard drive, ending in a 10- yard touchdown pass from Robinson to Holmes to go up, 24-7. South Alabama responded less than three minutes later when Jay Jones rushed in a score from 10 yards out, although the failed extra point attempt kept the score 24-13 in favor of the Trojans.

South Alabama inched closer early in the fourth quarter when Bridge completed a 56-yard touchdown pass to Bryant Lavender, but the ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed. Will Scott booted through a 23-yard field goal with 5:22 left in the game to give Troy an eight-point lead.

On the Jaguars' ensuing drive, Metheny ran in a touchdown from 16 yards out, but once again they failed to convert the two-point attempt as they remaining down by two, 27-25.

South Alabama forced the Trojans to punt but it was pinned on its own one-yard line with 1:45 to play. That didn't stop the Jaguars, however, as Metheny hooked up with Jereme Jones for a 65-yard touchdown. After finally converting a successful two-pointer, they held a six-point lead.
