Recap: Massachusetts vs. Akron

Foxboro, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Pohl passed for 208 yards and accounted for both of the Zips' touchdowns as Akron held on to defeat Massachusetts, 14-13, in a Mid-American Conference matchup at Gillette Stadium.

Pohl completed 20-of-33 pass attempts for 208 yards and a score and also rushed for a touchdown to lead Akron (4-7, 3-4 MAC) to earn back-to-back victories for the first time since the 2008 season. Jawon Chisholm was the recipient of Pohl's lone touchdown pass and paced the Zips on the ground with 72 yards on 10 attempts. Zach D'Orazio reeled in six receptions for 82 yards while Fransohn Bickley also finished with six catches for 55 yards.

A.J. Doyle started under center for UMass (1-9, 1-5) after missing the team's last game due to injury. Doyle hit on 13-of-21 throws for 75 yards and was picked off once before leaving the game mid-drive the third quarter. Mike Wegzyn took the snaps for the Minutemen and was much more effective as he passed for 76 yards and a score on 4-of-7 efficiency, but he was also intercepted once. Jamal Wilson carried the ball a game-high 22 times for 70 yards while Lorenzo Woodley was held to just 31 yards on 10 attempts.

After both offenses struggled in the early stages of the contest, Brendon Levengood connected on a 37-yard field goal with 32 seconds remaining in the opening frame to give the Minutemen a 3-0 lead.

The Zips responded with a five-play, 63-yard drive that Pohl concluded with a 10-yard touchdown run. UMass drove into Akron's territory on its next drive before settling for a 33-yard field goal by Levengood which made it 7-6 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter. Neither side managed to produce any more points before the intermission.

UMass went back in front as Wegzyn completed a two-yard touchdown pass to Rob Branchflower at the 6:58 mark of the third stanza. Levengood converted the ensuing extra-point attempt to give the hosts a 13-7 advantage.

Akron's offense was held scoreless for over 33 minutes, but it ended its drought with just under 10 minutes left in regulation as Pohl completed a 17- yard pass for a score to Chisholm to give the visitors a 14-13 lead.

The Minutemen picked up a first down on their ensuing drive and handed the ball off the Wilson on three consecutive plays to gain nine yards and create a fourth-and-one situation at the Akron 47-yard line. However, the Zips regained possession with 6:44 left to play after they stuffed Wilson at the line of scrimmage.

Akron managed to run out the rest of the clock to deny UMass another chance of a comeback.

The Zips managed to leave Foxboro victorious despite moving the chains on only one of their 13 third-down opportunities and losing three fumbles. UMass went 7-of-17 on third down plays, but turned the ball over on downs three times.
