Recap: Miami-Ohio vs. Bowling Green

Oxford, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Bowling Green quarterback Matt Johnson completed 20-of-26 passes for 252 yards with three touchdowns and an interception in leading the Falcons to a 45-3 drubbing of Miami-Ohio on Tuesday night.

Running back Travis Green, one of eight Falcons (6-3, 4-1 MAC) to carry the ball, rushed 14 times for 112 yards.

RedHawks (0-9, 0-5) quarterback Drew Kummer was making his first collegiate start in place of senior Austin Boucher who suffered a season-ending knee injury against Ohio.

Kummer finished 9-of-19 for 100 yards passing and third-string quarterback Austin Gearing threw for 31 yards late in the game on 6-of-6 passes. Running back Grant Niemiec was the leading rusher for the Redhawks with 40 yards on five carries.

Bowling Green swiftly opened up the scoring on its first possession when the team drove down the field with five consecutive plays over 10 yards. On 3rd-and-4 from the Miami-Ohio 6-yard line, Johnson hit wide receiver Shaun Joplin at the goal line where he muscled his way in for the score.

On Miami-Ohio's second drive, Kummer fumbled the exchange with running back Spencer Treadwell and forced kicker Kaleb Patterson into a 51-yard field goal attempt, which he drilled to give the RedHawks their lone score of the night.

Bowling Green answered with a field goal of its own, a 29-yarder from Tyler Tate, and on the ensuing RedHawks possession, running back Spencer McInnis fumbled on first down which was recovered by the Falcons. Bowling Green capitalized on the short field with a four-play, 29 yard drive capped by a William Houston 2-yard touchdown run.

Johnson went back to work after another Miami-Ohio punt, connecting on an 18- yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Alex Bayer with 1:19 remaining in the half.

Bowling Green led 24-3 at the break and turned the game into a rout in the third quarter.

A 1-yard touchdown run from Johnson was quickly followed by an 11-yard fumble recovery for a score by BooBoo Gates. Chris Pohlman hauled in a 38-yard score from Johnson later in the frame for a 45-3 lead.
