Recap: Buffalo vs. Connecticut

Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Joe Licata finished with three touchdown passes as the Buffalo Bulls completed a 41-12 rout of the Connecticut Huskies in a non-conference tilt at UB Stadium.

Licata went 10-of-19 for 177 yards and was picked off one time while leading the Bulls (2-2) to their second win in a row. Alex Neutz tallied 76 yards and a touchdown on his two receptions while Branden Oliver led Buffalo on the ground with 90 yards and a score on 23 attempts. The Bulls' defense registered five sacks and three interceptions.

For UConn (0-4), Chandler Whitmer was picked off twice and completed only 10- of-24 pass attempts for 182 yards. Geremy Davis made five catches for 102 yards. Lyle McCombs struggled once again, tallying only 33 yards on 13 carries. The Huskies were coming off a hard-fought, 27-24, home loss to Michigan.

Buffalo never trailed in the contest as it opened up the scoring with a five- yard touchdown pass from Licata for Mason Schreck less than three minutes after the opening kickoff. The scoring pass was set up by UB's defense as Adam Redden sacked Whitmer and caused a fumble which Adam Redden recovered at the Huskies' eight-yard line.

UConn scored its first points of the contest at the 6:20 mark of the first period as Chad Christen made a 33-yard field goal attempt. The Huskies' defense held its ground, but Buffalo scored another touchdown as Najja Johnson returned an interception 33 yards across the goal line.

The Huskies made it a one-possession game early in the second quarter as Christen booted a 37-yard field goal through the uprights. Buffalo scored two- straight touchdowns to create some breathing room as Oliver rushed five yards into the end zone and Licata completed a 22-yard pass to Neutz for six points.

UConn ended the run as McCombs rushed two yards for a touchdown with just under four minutes remaining the opening half. Whitmer failed to complete a pass on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt, which left the Bulls with a 28-12 lead as the game went into halftime.

The Bulls' defense held the visitors scoreless the rest of the way. Buffalo added to its lead in the third frame as Patrick Clarke converted field goal attempts from 49 and 50 yards away.

Licata completed his third touchdown pass of the game with 10:29 left in regulation as he found Fred Lee on a 36-yard scoring play. Clarke's successful extra point conversion marked the final score of the game with Buffalo holding a 41-12 lead.

The Huskies were limited to 220 yards of total offense and 0.7 yards per rush. Buffalo tallied 330 offensive yards to overcome its seven penalties that set it back 70 yards.
