Recap: Ball State vs. Kent State
Muncie, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Keith Wenning threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns, including the game-winner with under two minutes to play, as the Ball State Cardinals downed the Kent State Golden Flashes, 27-24, in a Mid- American Conference battle at Scheumann Stadium.
Wenning finished the night 23-of-46 but did throw two interceptions. Willie Snead pulled down 10 receptions for 152 yards and two touchdowns for the Cardinals (6-1, 3-0 MAC). Jordan Williams caught seven balls for 83 yards and a score while Jamill Smith caught a touchdown on three catches for 32 yards. Jahwan Edwards was the team's leading rusher, running for 73 yards on 11 carries.
For the Golden Flashes (2-5, 1-3) Colin Reardon finished with 166 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 19-of-24 passing. Reardon added 71 yards rushing on nine caries. Chris Humphrey led Kent State in receiving, catching nine passes for 106 yards and a score. Traylon Durham ran the ball 23 times for 77 yards.
After the teams traded turnovers on each of their first drives, the Golden Flashes got on the scoreboard first, with a nine-play, 80-yard drive for the score. Anthony Meray rushed it in from 10 yards out to put Kent State up 7-0 with a little over five minutes to play in the first quarter. Ball State fumbled on its next possession but Kent State was unable to capitalize as Brad Miller's 43-yard field goal attempt was wide left.
Late in the half, the Cardinals took under two minutes to move the ball 68 yards in just five plays to even the score at 7-7 when Wenning connected with Snead for a 39-yard touchdown pass.
After a big return of the second half kickoff gave it excellent field position, Ball State took its first lead of the day on a two-yard touchdown pass from Wenning to Williams with just two minutes gone in the third. Kent State answered on its next possession, marching 75 yards in nine plays, capped off by Reardon's 14-yard pass to Dri Archer for the score, and tying the game at 14-14 midway through the third quarter.
After the Ball State defense picked off Reardon, the Cardinals were set up in Kent State territory and proceeded to move the ball 39 yards for a score. Wenning hit Smith for a 25-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of the third quarter. After the extra point was missed, the Cardinals lead stood at 20-14.
Kent State retook the lead on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Reardon to Humphrey with 9:22 left in regulation that made the score 21-20. The Golden Flashes added a 21-yard field goal midway through the fourth that extended their lead to 24-20. The Cardinals took over the ball with just over three minutes left in the contest and marched 57 yards in five plays to take the lead at 27-24 with 1:43 to play. Wenning connected with Snead for a seven-yard touchdown on 4th-and-5. The Golden Flashes were able to get the ball to midfield but turned it over on downs and the Cardinals ran out the clock to secure the victory.
Ball State finished the day 7-of-13 on third down conversions while holding Kent State to just 5-of-14. The Golden Flashes did win the time of possession battle, 36:52 to 23:08.Game Notes
