Recap: Central Mich vs. Toledo

Mount Pleasant, MI (Sports Network) - David Fluellen rushed for a season-high 197 yards and two touchdowns as the Toledo Rockets blew past the Central Michigan Chippewas, 38-17, in a Mid-American Conference showdown at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

It was the fourth time in Fluellen's career that he's rushed for at least 190 yards in a game. Terrance Owens completed 13-of-17 passes for 139 yards and a touchdown for Toledo (2-2, 1-0 MAC), which has won two straight after losing its first two games of the season. Bernard Reedy caught eight passes for 96 yards to lead all receivers.

For CMU (1-3, 0-1), Cooper Rush was 14-of-24 for 214 yards, tossing a touchdown and two interceptions. Saylor Lavallii logged 24 carries for a career-high 144 yards and a touchdown.

After Chase Murdock picked off a Rush pass on the game's opening drive, the Rockets took advantage with a two-yard touchdown run by Fluellen to take an early lead.

Rush rebounded later in the quarter by tying the score at 7-7 on a 19-yard touchdown pass to Connor Odykirk, but the Chippewas' quarterback made another crucial mistake just a few minutes later when he fumbled deep in CMU territory. Junior Sylvestre picked up the loose ball and returned it 22 yards for a score to put Toledo back on top.

The Rockets extended their lead at the 4:37 mark of the second quarter on a three-yard scoring strike from Owens to Alonzo Russell. CMU kept the game close by adding a one-yard Lavallii touchdown rush with under a minute remaining in the half.

The teams exchanged field goals in the third quarter. Jeremiah Detmer connected on a 35-yarder for Toledo, then Ron Coluzzi drilled a 40-yarder for CMU, as the Rockets retained a seven-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Toledo gave itself some breathing room with 13:51 left in the game when Damion Jones-Moore rushed in a touchdown from 15 yards out. The Rockets put the game away later in the fourth quarter by capping off a nine-play, 74-yard drive with a four-yard rushing touchdown by Fluellen.

The Rockets were fantastic on third down, converting 9-of-12 opportunities, while the Chippewas were only 3-of-9.
