Recap: Toledo vs. Western Mich
Toledo, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - David Fluellen scored a career-high total of four rushing touchdowns to lead the Toledo Rockets to a 47-20 rout of the Western Michigan Broncos in a Mid-American Conference tilt at the Glass Bowl.
Fluellen racked up 220 yards on 23 attempts for Toledo (3-3, 2-1 MAC) to tie Chester Taylor's program record of four career 200-yard rushing games. Terrance Owens completed 11-of-25 pass attempts for 149 yards and a touchdown while Bernard Reedy reeled in four catches for 85 yards and a score. The victory was the third in four games for the Rockets.
For WMU (0-6, 0-2), Tyler Van Tubbergen went 9-of-19 for 104 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Corey Davis led the Broncos in receiving with five catches and 77 yards. Zach Terrell saw action under center also and hit on 10-of-13 pass attempts for 184 yards with one interception. Dareyon Chance finished with 80 yards and a touchdown on 25 rushes. The loss was the eighth in a row dating back to last season for WMU, which is still winless under first-year head coach P.J. Fleck.
The Rockets took control right away. After WMU's opening drive ended with a Chaz Whitaker interception of Van Tubbergen, Owens completed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Reedy on Toledo's opening play of the contest.
Toledo added another touchdown in the first quarter as Fluellen rushed seven yards for a touchdown at the 7:41 mark of the period. The Rockets had their two-point conversion attempt denied, which left them with a 13-0 advantage.
The hosts continued their run into the second frame as Jeremiah Detmer connected on a 39-yard field goal with 9:16 remaining before the break. Fluellen scored on a six-yard run with just under five minutes left in the second quarter. Detmer's successful extra-point conversion gave the Rockets a commanding, 23-0 lead.
WMU finally ended the run with only a minute left before the intermission as Van Tubbergen completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Eric Boyden.
Toledo expanded its 23-7 halftime lead in the third quarter with another run. Fluellen scored the first points of the second half as he broke away for a 66- yard touchdown run. The Rockets' defense contributed to the rout as Trent Voss returned a Van Tubbergen fumble seven yards for a touchdown. Detmer converted both extra point attempts and also a 29-yard field goal, which gave Toledo a 40-7 lead with over nine minutes left in the third quarter.
Fluellen tacked on his fourth rushing touchdown with 3:29 left in the third period.
The Broncos ended the second-half run early in the fourth quarter as Haldeman chipped in a 19-yard field goal attempt. The sophomore kicker scored again as he connected on a 35-yard field goal try at the 6:22 mark of the fourth quarter.
WMU continued its strong fourth quarter as Chance concluded a 96-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run with just over two minutes left to play. Haldeman's successful extra-point kick narrowed the deficit to 47-20.
The rally would end there as both sides were held scoreless over the final two minutes of action.
Toledo gained 528 yards of total offense including 360 yards rushing. WMU amassed only 87 rushing yards on 40 attempts. The Broncos also committed four turnovers without registering a takeaway in the lopsided setback.Game Notes
