Recap: Temple vs. Connecticut

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Yawin Smallwood returned an interception 59 yards for a touchdown to complete a 28-21 comeback victory for the Connecticut Huskies over the Temple Owls in an American Athletic Conference stunner at Lincoln Financial Field.

Casey Cochran threw for only 111 yards on 8-of-18 passing and had a touchdown to match an interception for UConn (1-9, 1-5 AAc), which earned its first win of the season and first under interim head coach T.J. Weist. Geremy Davis had four receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown while Max DeLorenzo (61 yards, TD) and Lyle McCombs (51 yards) led the way on the ground.

P.J. Walker threw for 289 yards and a touchdown on 26-of-46 passing and also led Temple (1-10, 0-7) in rushing with 32 yards and a score. However Walker was also sacked five times and threw the costly interception. Ryan Alderman caught seven passes for 98 yards and Robby Anderson had 81 yards and a score on six catches.

Temple owned the first half and led 21-0 at the break. Walker started the scoring with a six-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter.

In the second frame Anderson hauled in an eight-yard touchdown pass from Walker and Zaire Williams scored on an 18-yard touchdown run.

After intermission the Huskies rally began. Davis brought in a 33-yard touchdown pass from Cochran early in the third quarter and DeLorenzo added a four-yard touchdown run with under a minute to play in the period.

Cochran scored himself, on a one-yard touchdown run, midway through the final quarter to pull the Huskies even.

Temple took over from there at their own 35-yard line. After driving the Owls into Huskies' territory, Walker was intercepted by Smallwood, who returned the ball for the winning score.

The Owls had a chance to tie things up but their final drive stalled when Walker's pass fell incomplete on 4th-and-20.

Temple lost despite having a 372-235 edge in total yards as it failed to score on 2-of-5 trips to the red zone.
