Recap: Air Force vs. Wyoming

USAFA, CO (Sports Network) - Brett Smith racked up 511 total yards and five touchdowns as the Wyoming Cowboys routed the Air Force Falcons, 56-23, in a Mountain West Conference battle at Falcon Stadium.

Smith threw for 373 yards and four scores on 35-of-41 pass and also rushed for 138 yards and an additional score on the ground for Wyoming (3-1, 1-0 MWC). Dominic Rufran caught eight passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns, Robert Herron had nine receptions for 94 yards and a score and Tanner Gentry brought in nine passes for 79 yards.

Jon Lee rushed for a team-high 82 yards on eight carries for Air Force (1-3, 0-3). Jaleel Awini had 68 yards and a touchdown on the ground and also completed 11-of-18 pass attempts for 89 yards.

On its first drive of the game, Air Force was able to get into the end zone when Awini scored on a 33-yard touchdown run.

Wyoming responded on its next drive with a seven-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Rufran. The big play of the drive was a 74-yard run by Smith.

Air Force pushed itself back into the lead with a 33-yard field goal from Will Conant on the Falcons' next possession.

Wyoming would take its first lead of the game with 4:05 left in the first quarter. After the Cowboys forced a turnover on downs from the Falcons, Smith threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Rufran.

The Cowboys' advantage grew to 21-10 early in the second quarter when Shaun Wick scored on a six-yard touchdown run.

On the ensuing kickoff LaCoste fumbled the ball and Wyoming recovered. That set up a four-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Jalen Claiborne seven plays later.

Air Force put a stop to Wyoming's scoring streak with a six-yard touchdown run from Anthony LaCoste.

However Wyoming would put 14 points on the board before the half with a six- yard touchdown run from Smith and a 10-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Herron.

Wick scored on a three-yard touchdown run on Wyoming's first drive of the second half. After the score the Cowboys' lead ballooned to 49-17.

The Falcons cut into their deficit early in the fourth quarter on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Karson Roberts to Jalen Robinette. However the two-point conversion attempt failed.

The Falcons' slim comeback chances were dealt a fatal blow on the Cowboys' next possession, as Tedder Easton scored on a two-yard touchdown run.

Wyoming had 10 more first downs than Air Force (34-24) while having 622 total yards of offense to 473 by the Falcons. Wyoming scored touchdowns on all seven of its red zone chances while Air Force did so on just 2-of-3 trips.
