Recap: Utah State vs. Hawaii
Logan, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Darell Garretson threw for a career-high 370 yards and three touchdowns as he led the Utah State Aggies to a convincing 47-10 win over the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in Mountain West Conference action at Romney Stadium.
Garretson converted 28-of-41 passing in just his second career start for the Aggies (5-4, 4-1 MWC) as they posted their second straight win. Joey DeMartino had 104 rushing yards and a touchdown on 20 attempts, while Travis Reynolds delivered 152 yards and a score on eight catches for the hosts.
The Rainbow Warriors (0-8, 0-6) were paced by Sean Schroeder who threw for 213 yards and a touchdown, while going 13-of-26 passing, but he was also picked off three times as the team fell for the 11th straight time on the road.
Utah State scored on its first drive of the game, going 12 plays and 80 yards for the touchdown as Garretson connected with Bruce Natson on an 11-yard touchdown toss.
Hawaii answered back with a 33-yard field goal by Tyler Hadden, but then the hosts took control with 16 unanswered points to close out the half.
Nick Diaz knocked through a 40-yard field goal attempt, DeMartino reached the end zone on a four-yard run, Diaz chipped in a 32-yard field goal and Jake Thompson delivered on a 52-yard field goal for the Aggies as they carried a 23-3 advantage into the break.
The Rainbow Warriors came out of the half strong by scoring a touchdown on their first drive. Schroeder completed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Keith Kirkwood, to bring the score to 23-10.
As was the case in the first half, after Hawaii scored the Aggies took over and this time they rattled off 24 straight points to put the game out of reach.
Diaz nailed a 32-yard field goal at the 9:51 mark of the third, followed by a 30-yard TD pass from Garretson to Travis Reynolds. The USU defense then got in on the action as Kyler Fackrell picked off a pass and returned it 99 yards for a score with less than two minutes left in the third frame.
Garretson added a 44-yard pass to Wyatt Houston with 10:29 left in the game.
Utah State has now won 15 of its last 16 conference games dating back to the 2011 season.
Hawaii, which was delayed at LAX for approximately 12 hours due to the shooting at the airport and didn't arrive in Logan until early Saturday morning, finished with 319 yards of total offense, compared to 533 for the Aggies.Game Notes
