Recap: Wyoming vs. Hawaii

Laramie, WY (SportsNetwork.com) - Brett Smith set the school record for passing touchdowns in a single game with seven as the Wyoming Cowboys defeated the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, 59-56, in overtime in a Mountain West Conference shootout at War Memorial Stadium.

Smith finished 29-of-48 for 498 yards and seven scores through the air to help Wyoming (5-6, 3-4 MWC) snap a four-game losing slide and keep its postseason hopes alive. Smith also compiled 142 yards and a touchdown on 19 attempts while Shaun Wick tallied 89 yards on 16 rushing attempts. Robert Herron had a huge game as well, reeling in 11 receptions for 141 yards and four touchdowns, which tied the Wyoming record for touchdown catches in a game. Dominic Rufran made seven grabs for 121 yards and Jalen Claiborne had three catches for 97 yards including a 71 yard touchdown reception.

The Rainbow Warriors (0-11, 0-8) came up short of their inaugural win of the 2013 campaign despite a terrific performance by Sean Schroeder, who completed 37-of-50 pass attempts for 499 yards and six touchdowns with just one pick. Chris Gant tied the Hawaii record with four touchdown catches as he reeled in eight catches for 174 yards. Joey Iosefa rushed 24 times for 91 yards and a pair of scores.

Hawaii struck first as Iosefa rushed two yards for a score at the 9:27 mark of the opening period to give the visitors a 7-0 lead.

Wyoming answered as Smith completed a seven-yard touchdown pass to Shaun Wick with just over six minutes left in the first frame. The Cowboys attempted to take the lead with a two-point conversion, but Sam Stratton's pass fell incomplete. Smith put the Cowboys ahead with a 23-yard strike to Herron with 3:45 left in the first quarter. Stuart Williams converted the ensuing extra- point attempt to put the hosts on top, 13-7.

The Rainbow Warriors responded with just under a minute left before the start of the second stanza as Schroeder connected with Gant on a 34-yard touchdown pass. Tyler Hadden sent his extra-point kick through the uprights to give Hawaii a 14-13 lead as the game progressed into the second quarter.

The contest went back and forth in the 15 minutes before halftime. Smith completed a 47-yard touchdown pass to Herron in the opening seconds of the second period to put Wyoming back on top. Hawaii answered right back as Iosefa scored on a 15-yard run.

The Cowboys went ahead, 28-21, as Smith broke away for a 51-yard touchdown run before completing a pass to Spencer Bruce for a successful two-point conversion.

Hawaii evened the score at 28 as Schroeder found Gant and hit him with a 30- yard touchdown pass. The Cowboys jumped back in front as Smith and Keenan Montgomery hooked up for a 72-yard touchdown pass. The Rainbow Warriors refused to go away as Schroeder threw a six-yard pass to Marcus Langkilde for a touchdown to send the contest into the intermission tied up at 35.

Hawaii took a 42-35 lead with 13:23 left in the third quarter as Schroeder connected with Gant on a 29-yard touchdown pass. Wyoming evened the score late in the third period as Smith completed a 20-yard strike to Herron to send the game into the final stanza knotted up at 42.

The Rainbow Warriors went back in front less than two minutes into the fourth frame as Schroeder completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Clark Evans. Hadden's extra-point attempt was blocked, which kept the hosts within six points.

Smith continued to find success as he connected with Claiborne for a 71-yard touchdown pass. Stuart Williams made the ensuing extra-point attempt to put Wyoming on top, 49-48, with 12:31 remaining in regulation. The Cowboys then created some distance with just under three minutes left to play as Smith and Herron connected for a score the fourth time of the contest on a five-yard passing play.

Hawaii managed to score with 1:18 remaining as Schroeder completed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Gant. The duo hooked up on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt to tie the score at 56.

The Rainbow Warriors drove all the way down to the Wyoming 4-yard line in the first segment of overtime, but Iosefa was stopped on fourth-and-goal. Williams converted a 36-yard field goal try to end the contest.

The MWC foes combined for 1,417 total yards of offense. Wyoming finished with 793 total yards on 98 plays while Hawaii produced 624 total yards on 92 plays. Out of the 16 scoring drives in regulation, only one lasted more than four minutes.
