Recap: Georgia vs. Char Southern

Athens, GA ( - Hutson Mason passed for 187 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half, and No. 9 Georgia cruised to a 55-9 win over FCS foe Charleston Southern on Saturday.

Mason played only two quarters because of the lopsided score. The Bulldogs scored points on each of their first five drives and led 38-3 at halftime.

"We talked all week about respecting this opponent and you show that respect by giving them your best shot," said Georgia head coach Mark Richt. "We did just that. Our focus was where it ought to be. The energy level was high, the execution was outstanding and we got some breaks with some turnovers."

Nick Chubb rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries for Georgia (9-2), which will clinch a spot in the SEC championship game if Missouri loses against Arkansas next week.

Austin Brown was 4-of-10 for 15 yards and one interception for Charleston Southern (8-4) before he got injured late in the first half.

The Buccaneers, who wrapped up their regular season, were outgained 580-211.

Georgia led 14-0 after only three offensive plays. Mason threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Chris Conley on first down after a Ben Robinson fumble, then Chubb cut to the outside and scampered 83 yards down the right sideline to the end zone.

Mason and Justin Scott-Wesley connected for a 19-yard touchdown on the fifth play of the third Bulldogs possession, and Marshall Morgan drilled a 53-yard field goal with 42 seconds left in the first quarter.

Chubb scored on an 8-yard run and Conley made a diving, full-extension grab in the back of the end zone for a 23-yard TD in the second quarter.

The Buccaneers got on the board when David Kennedy kicked a 45-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining in the first half.

Brice Ramsey replaced Mason at the outset of the second half and threw a 12- yard TD pass to Jonathon Rumph during a 17-point third quarter.

Morgan, who missed a 49-yard try in the second quarter, converted a 27-yarder and Quayvon Hicks scored on a 33-yard run.

Christian Reyes had a 2-yard TD run for Charleston Southern in the fourth quarter. A two-point conversion try failed.

"I am proud of our team for competing and continuing to fight to the end of the game," said Charleston Southern head coach Jamey Chadwell.
